Golf--bettering society?
« on: August 14, 2008, 03:29:01 PM »
This forum has proven very valuable in terms of course/city recommendations, various lists I've attempted to compile, etc.  Once again, let me query the collective intelligence/experience of regular participants.

I'm curious about organizations that either grow the game itself, or better society.  Obvious examples include the PGA Tour, with their well-marketed "Drive to a Billion" campaign--now more than a billion charitable dollars raised.  The PGA of America grows the game, as does the First Tee Foundation.  There is also the Chick Evans and Francis Ouimet Scholarship Funds, which allocate significant dollars towards college.  At Secession Club in Beaufort, SC, there is the LeVeen--Roach Scholarship Fund, dedicated to the memory of two members, 9/11 victims, that has raised much money for college scholarships.  Beyond this, there is the Tiger Woods and Lorena Ochoa Foundations, both doing excellent work.
My question--What other golf-oriented charities or foundations are either growing the game, or bettering society in some capacity?  I'm sure there are dozens more that I'm not aware of.
Thank you for any insight you can provide.

Thanks--that Open Fairways Program is exactly the kind of info. I'm looking for.
Surely there must be others?

Glen Mills School in Glen Mills, PA.  A Weed course, a darn good one at that, that lets kids from the school work at the course.  These are kids getting a second chance, and it's been very successful for the kids and a great addition to Philly area publc golf.

Brazil's first public course was built in a poor area near Rio de Janeiro.  They have a golf school for poor kids, that is becoming pretty popular.  The kids must go to school and get good grades.  They also get lots of instruction and playing time at the course, and the families get help with food.  So far, I've heard, it's been a great success.  Here is a link about the program:
