A list of courses without yardage markers
« on: August 12, 2008, 08:13:03 PM »
Can anyone assist in assembling such a list?

After seeing the length of the Range Finders and Yardage etc thread get to 15 pages, I began to wonder who remains "sans yardages"

I remember only 3 that I've seen.

Cypress Point
San Francisco Golf Club
Ballyneal

I hear Pine Valley is like Ballyneal and has a numerical symbol decoder type deal on a few heads, which counts as courses without yardages in my mind.  Is that correct?

Side note.  I think SF and Ballyneal are "sans bathrooms as well"

Without yardage markers?  Merion has yardage markers but codes them so only the caddies have the data.  That is not at all "without yardage markers"!!!!!!!!!

So does Friar's Head.  I'm not sure why clubs get cute and put in a secret code to determine distance that only the caddies know.   Doesn't make any sense.

Paul - Merion does not have numbered heads (codes or yardage). Pine Valley, on the other hand, does have numbered heads.

Trust me, I have a free dinner from Pat Mucci that proves it.  ;D

Paul Carey,

That is not true.  There are no yardage indicators of any kind at Merion East.  The caddies know the yardages from trees and also by unmarked sprinkler heads.  Merion West has yardage indications on the sprinkler heads.

I think that must be a change in the past few years.  I am sure it used to have a key code.

How about a list of courses without yardage markers, yardage books or caddies.

Ballyneal caddies have GPS, and the yardage books in the pro shop provide a key for the numbered sprinkler heads.

Also, while Ballyneal does not have bathrooms on the course, their are some nifty ground-level, foot pedal-operated trash cans that can be used in a pinch. :o ;)

The Valley Club...

Josh,

Its funny you started this thread because I was just explaining to my dad why I'm not interested in having the golf course yardage guide application on my iPhone.

Also you could add The Sheep Ranch to the list, which is "sans" just about everything.

Pete,

Are you sure Woodhall Spa doesn't have any yardage markers?  I was out there a couple months ago and I thought I remember seeing some , but I could be wrong.

So there are 15,000+ US courses and we're going to find a couple dozen that are unmarked and maybe NONE that don't offer yardage some way of knowing via book, caddy or marker.

I am such a freak for wondering what my yardage is.....  ;-)

Sunnybrook in the Philly 'burbs used to have no actual markers on the course but the scorecard had distances from trees and bunkers. I haven't played there in years so I don't know the current situation.

Essex County Club north of Boston---if I recall correctly, they only offer a lone stick (maybe a scrub tree) at the approximate 150 yard distance off to the side of the fairway.
They also have actual grass tennis courts, another true rarity!

Myopia...see Essex above...it gets confusing b/c the yardage book (done annually by the Essex assistant) has yardages to the front of the green, and the stick is to the middle I believe....
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I've played many courses where the sprinkler heads are not marked but never played a course without any yardage markers of some kind (and I've played almost all those mentioned so far in this thread).  Even at Pine Valley and Merion, the caddies know all the yardages from different heads/features.  Also, all the score cards have yardages on them from the different tees.  Even at Sebonack, the caddies know all the yardages.  Same goes for the Old Course at St. Andrews and most any other links course.  Yardage books are also available for most.
