O/T Auction of GCA/golf related items
« on: July 30, 2008, 01:38:13 PM »

Auction of GCA/golf related items is set for August 14 (Sale 385) by PBA Galleries, San Francisco.

The Auction includes many interesting items. Based on quick scan, the most expensive item might be the  E. Harvey Ward stirling silver Low Amateur Trophy Cup from the 1957 Masters.  Estimated pre-sale is 20,000/30,000.   Lot #216  >> My reaction was ‘yikes'.

It also has an item,  the 'International Team Championship of the Pacific' Trophy (1934-1943), established by Egan, engraved with winning team club and individual names.  Stirling silver.  Pre-auction estimate 7000/10000.  Lot # 296.   >>>    Would look nice IMO in MPCC club house as they won the trophy in 1935 and 1936.  Pebble Beach team won as well.   That would only be about 5 tee times for Pebble Beach owners to buy.

There are many other items and among the books, there are several nice ones.

A first edition of ‘Golf Course Architecture in America' with inscription to Zane Grey signed by G.C Thomas, etc.   Pre-auction estimate 2000/3000. Lot # 319.

A ‘rare' signed limited first edition ‘Mutt'  by Tillinghast, only 4th auction in past 20 years etc. Pre-auction estimate 7000/10000. Lot # 320.

‘Scotland's Gift', signed by CBM and Hugh Wilson.  Copy no. 181 of 260. First Edition.  Pre-auction estimate 6000/9000.  Lot #208.  No slipcase     No wait.....bad joke...bad joke.   Only signed by CBM.  Whew!

Another ‘Scotland's Gift',  First Trade Edition.  Not signed. Pre-auction estimate 400/700.  Lot #209.

A ‘Golf Architecture' by Mackenzie, first edition, signed,  "To George A. Ranney, with best wishes from the author, June 1930. Cypress Point Club, Pebble Beach California". Pre-auction estimate 5000/8000.  Lot # 210.

There is also a book by Tony Lema, ‘Golfers' Gold' inscribed   " To Dr. Ward, Read on, and be thankful your not a golf Pro. Golfingly Tony Lema".      Pre-auction estimate 500/800.  Lot #206.  >>  I like the funny inscription.

A first edition of ‘Municipal Golf Courses' by Colt & Alison. Described as scarce phamplet, 8 pp, 4 photographs. Near fine.  Pre-auction estimate 1000/1500.  Lot #68.   PBA Galleries description includes  "Not listed in any golf bibliographies consulted.  No copies found in auction records consulted."     >>>   The PBA description adds some interest to this item.

A first edition of ‘Some Essays on Golf Course Architecture' by Colt & Alison. Described as very good or better.  Pre-auction estimate 2000/3000.  Lot #69.

Many nice first editions by Darwin, Hutchinson, Wodehouse, and of course the usual assortment of Bobby Jones materials, etc.

Visit their website.     Nice catalog to look at but seems like more window shopping for me.

Calamity Jane is worth nearer $100,000, but the other items seem expensive.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

Agree that if that the putter is the original Calamity Jane, and it is described as such,  then the value would be much higher.   That is odd.

The 'signed' books, and there are only a few, by the well known GCAs and such,  might seem high, but it is an auction so you never known. These are priced well above any consideration by me.

The other first editions, unsigned, in good to fine condition, seem to have reasonable pre-auction estimate.

Also, in this auction, there are no issues re: Doak's few items like the last large PBA golf auction.  In this current auction, the maroon Confidential Guide seems high, lot #115, 2000/3000 but I have not been watching eBay very closely.  The other Confidential, third edition, signed, lot #116,  seems low (200/300) based on eBay six months ago.

One other interesting thing is that the very last lot (352) is 10 oversize architecture books which would make up a good starter set for someone.  The set includes the Confidential Guide and has an estimate of 200/300.

It contains:
With: Tillinghast. The Course Beautiful. Signed by the 2 editors and the researcher all on the title page. TreeWolf, [1995]. * Doak. The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses. Sleeping Bear Press, [1996]. * Doak. The Life and Work of Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Signed by Doak on bookplate. Sleeping Bear Press, [2001]. * Tillinghast. Gleanings from the Wayside. Signed by the 2 editors and the researcher all on the title page. TreeWolf, [2001]. * Dunn. Great Donald Ross Golf Courses You Can Play. Derrydale Press, [2001]. * Klein. Discovering Donald Ross: The Architect and His Golf Courses. Signed by author on laid-in bookplate. Sleeping Bear Press, [2001]. * Nicklaus by Design: Golf Course Strategy and Architecture. Abrams, [2002]. * Bahto. The Evangelist of Golf: The story of C.B. Macdonald. Clock Tower, [2002]. * St. Jorre. Legenday Golf Clubs of the American East. Edgeworth, [2003]. * Daley. Favourite Holes by Design, The Architect’s Choice. 2 dj’s. Signed by author on affixed label. Full Swing Golf, [2004]. Together, 10 volumes. Illustrations. 4to. Cloth &/or boards, jackets. In 1931 Bobby Jones allowed Spaulding to reproduce the CJP. This is probably a clone and not the one Bobby Jones used in competition.

Pete,

The photo in the auction book shows the signature of Bobby Jones stamped in the back of the putter.    So,    that did make me pause as to whether it was THE CJP used by Bobby Jones.

The estimate indicates the situation is as you stated.

For any new folks or interested folks,    PBA Galleries is listing  'some' golf/GCA auction items on eBay as well.    Auction is August 14.

The signed ‘Golf Architecture' by Mackenzie, first edition' is on eBay.

PBA did this in previous auctions.   Thought newbies might want to know as eBay might be easier for some, if PBA put your item of interest is on eBay.

Anyone have any idea what a first edition of "Down the Fairway," autographed by Bobby Jones, is worth these days?

I was browsing in a friend's sister's apartment in NYC a few years ago and ran across this gem in her bookcase.   I mentioned it to my friend later, and she said, "You should have just nipped it, her late husband was a book collector but she has no idea what's in those bookcases!"

I'm glad I didn't but I've wondered what that collection is worth!
