What Are "Championship Greens"?
« on: August 06, 2008, 03:24:45 AM »
The following is a quote from a book by a noted golf course architect and former multiple major winner I glanced at recently.

"The greens had to comply to the high standard of difficulty applicable to golf at its highest level.  They had to be 'championship' greens. "

Is championship different from interesting?

Given the focus this week is on a course with extreme greens, would those of Prestwick or Crstal Downs or North Berwick pass muster too?

'Championship' is an imaginary term invented to meet an owner's brief....

Hi Mark,

I normally think of Championship Greens as an agronomic reference but given the context of the quote it strikes me as an architectural comment and it does seem as though that it would be comparable to interesting with excellent agronomic conditioning.

(basically just another way to come up with yet another stupid term to describe a course)
