Beechtree Going Away Party - GCA Gathering
« on: July 31, 2008, 01:37:46 PM »

Over on the Beechtree thread there were a few folks showing interest in a mini GCA gathering at Beechtree for a going away party.

Those that have shown interest:
- Jay Flemma
- Dan Herman
- Jim Franklin
- Chip Gaskins

It is open until Thanksgiving but it would probably be fun to get out there before it get too cold, maybe in late September or early October.

Thoughts?  Dates?

I would suggest later in October.  Last year I was there on November 21 and some of the trees still had nice color.  But I do think last year was a bit unusual in that the trees changed colors late.  I'll bet it can be awesome there:

Is the course or your company worth a 3-hour drive?  I assume at a minimum the answer to the second question is yes, so it's a possibility for me.  Weekend of 10/3 would be good for me since there's a tournament at my club that I won't be playing in.

Phil, my answer is an emphatic yes.  I'm driving three and as half for it...from NYC.  And yes, your company certainly is worth five hours and a three-plus hour drive.  I love hanging with you guys.

Scare up the Philly boys...calling powell arms, steve shaffer and Mike cirba!

Weekend of 10/3 looks good to me too.

I'm curious...

Is there an exact date on when ground beaking, or should I say course destruction will commence?  I usually have a holiday work party back in Reston, VA every year in early December and at the very least I wouldn't mind going out there and taking a look around before its gone for good.

Thanks,

Kalen

Chip,

Cory Lewis used to work there. He said he would try to organize something with the owner. I'm definitely interested. I've played there twice and unfortunately one time was after a deluge and the course was soaked. When fast and firm, it's fun to play.

I'll even spend the gas money to play there. It's at least a 90 minute drive from my house.

Jay,

I'm would coming from Scardale so we basically have the same drive.

Or we could drive down together and listen to Phish on the way.  That would get us in the mood for golf.

Scott-

Does Cory post here often?  How would I reach him?

So it looks like a decent group already!

Those that have shown interest:
- Jay Flemma
- Dan Herman
- Jim Franklin
- Chip Gaskins
- Phil Benedict
- Steve Shaffer (I think)

A weekend works best for me...I assume for the majority of the group that would be same.

Now the hard part, finding an exact date that works for the majority.

I called steve czaban and some one should rustle up jerry kluger.

In the meantime, lets post some photos of the course.  That way we can have a photo tour of her for the website after she's gone...

I was actually thinking about organizing something on a weekday because from working there I know you can only make tee times a month in advance and for a large group, 12 or more, you must guarantee the exact number or you are charged.  Of course this might have changed since I left.

For both of the GCA Outings I had at Beechtree while I was there we had people cancel the day of play so I'm not comfortable sticking my neck out for a weekend.  If you guys want to arrange something on the weekend I would suggest you pick a date and call 30 days out, you should be able to get the tee times you want without much trouble.

I'll be there if the dates work; a weekday is fine with me.

This would be a very bittersweet event for me. Since it opened, Beechtree has been THE most enjoyable, high-quality, daily fee course within a reasonable driving distance of DC. I brought many friends there over the years and always had a terrific time.  Where do we go now?

Laurel Hill, Whiskey Creek, and Westfields (in that order) are all fun tracks at the same price point.  Bulle Rock is also a good course, but a little more expensive.

Jay,

Westfields is a nice Gene Bates layout with a meaningless Fred Couples signature on it.  It has 18 nice holes, but no spectacular ones.  Plus, the staff is nice and attentive.  The one thing I don't like about all 3 courses is that walking is discouraged, though not disallowed on any of them afaik.

Even if they didn't discourage walking, none of these three courses are designed for walking anyway.  Especially Laurel Hill, which I would think would be a bear to walk.  That said, I agree that these are three of the best upscale courses in the DC area.  I have particularly come to really love Laurel Hill -- it's an outstanding track with no weak holes and a bunch of memorable ones.

I would also be open to a gathering at Beechtree.  I've never had the pleasure of playing a round there, so I'm definitely going to find a way to get there before it closes.

Weekends are much better for me, as I don't think I can get time off work for this.

I've walked beechtreet and bulle rock on the same day twice and had no problem doing it.  They're actually quite walkable.

QED. Those courses are good examples of why I'll miss Beechtree.
