Invite to GolfClubAtlas.com's 2009 Trip to South Africa
« on: July 24, 2008, 04:07:32 PM »
Some days you wake up and go why, why WHY?! This is especially true if you are involved in mortgage-backed securities.  :P Other days you wake up and Greg Norman is leading a Major, at least through Saturday ;), and you think that all is well with the world. Still other days you wake up and think, “WHY AM I THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD THAT HASN’T BEEN TO SOUTH AFRICA TO PLAY GOLF?”

I am sure we have all had that feeling 8), especially after seeing golf magazine after golf magazine feature SA on its cover. Thus, in an effort to save us all from despair, Ben and I have decided to lead a group there at the start of February next year. This is certainly a trip and not a vacation in that we will be covering some ground over the ten days. Obviously, it is a golf architecture specific itinerary featuring a mix of the old (e.g. Humewood, Durban) with the new (e.g. Pinnacle Point, Leopard Creek). All told, we are playing six different courses and yes, we are playing Durban and Pinnacle Point twice each. In fact, we are meeting with the architect of Pinnacle Point, Peter Matkovich, there which promises to be a most informative evening. We elected to pass on Sun City – having watched it for years on television, it doesn’t quite hold the same interest as the other courses. Of course, if you really want to see it, you can tack on a few days at the start or end of the trip and do it that way.

The accommodations are luxe and we are staying at some of the most famous hotels in SA, including Pezula and 12 Apostles in Cape Town. On the non-golf side, apart from the famous game reserve at Mala Mala, the part I’m looking forward the most to is being in Cape Town, which many well traveled friends consider their favorite spot in the world. For more information on the golf and accommodations, please go to this link:
GCA South Africa Trip

Ben and I are bringing our wives and other wives are coming too. One other gentleman is bringing his teenage son who is a good golfer.  We hope to have at least twelve of us, in part to defray the cost of hiring a private plane for two internal trips, which will ease the rigors of getting from Durban to Mala Mala and Mala Mala to Leopard Creek.

For more information, please contact Ben through his travel company Golf TI either by email at bencd@golfti.com or phone 416.605.4653 or make a post here. The intent is to assemble a nice group of people and to enjoy our time on the African continent. We are going to meet some interesting folks along the way and it should be a highly educational experience. Personally speaking, I don’t know when we will be going back so we have endeavored to do this trip up right – hope you’ll consider joining us.

Cheers,

It looks amazing and I wish I could work it out but can't.   Thanks for the invite.

Is there much public golf in SA?

Until Philip Gawith comes on to provide the final answer, let me attempt something in the meantime.

Yes, there is a boom in "public" course construction in ZA. "Public" in the sense these are either resorts or real-estate driven courses; as an overseas visitor you will be welcomed at all these places but may need to pay the freight!

Many are discovering the charms of South Africa as a second-home place, although the English may be called out for their lunacy of rationalizing ZA as a good place for a weekend home.  (World travelers, yes -- but that's a long way for a weekend, especially when one submits oneself to the casino-like odds that are flights from LHR!)

You might Google "Garden Route" for a sense of what's going on down there.

Also, there was a great George Peper article in Links Magazine chronicling his trip.  Click this sentence to be taken to it.

Lastly, I should note what a fantastic people South Africans are.  Very generous, perhaps a little less traveled than other nations, and meat-eaters (they love their biltong).  Hmm, sort of like Americans...

Really a fascinating, polyglot nation, as evidenced by their nine official languages!

Looks like a wonderful trip; the only thing missing, as with every platinum-level journey, is the opportunity to experience the "real" country.

It won't make up for that but one suggestion for those who go is to build in some time for a visit to the Apartheid Museum in Joburg.  A more moving and hopeful experience you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere.

I should also add re "public" that nowhere have I been shown greater kindness than at the Durban Country Club -- nowhere!

Does this trip include the helicopter ride to the vertical drop par 3 where you hit to a green the shape of Africa?

Why not hit from a mat in the helicopter? ;D

At a different stage of life with the kids, I would love to see South Africa and Zimbabwe. I fished a number of summers with some guys that owned a safari in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). When you are 100 miles off the coast of New Jersey in a boat in the Atlantic and the tuna are not running, you need some good story tellers to pass the time. Tony and his friends had other worldly stories of life in Africa that were fascinating, and at that time when things were changing politically down there, they were troubling too. For those that have had the pleasure of playing golf and hearing the story telling of Bob Huntley, think of 10 days of fascination. Enjoy the trip.

Bette and I did South Africa a few years ago around the Presidents Cup.

All with enjoy this adventure.

It is amazing how close you can get to the Lions and how difficult it is to find the Leopards.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I think for a GCA fan with a love for the outdoor world and a sense of curiosity, it is difficult to imagine a better trip. Durban Country Club is one of Tom Doaks' Gourmet selection for a reason, and Humewood is an excellent links. Pinnacle Point has a sensational location and will elicit controversy - so too the Fancourt Links course which is contrived in the way that Whistling Straits is, but also in a wonderful location. I have not played Leopard Creek - conceived as South Africa's answer to Augusta. What it may lack in ultimate GCA finesse ( I am guessing) it surely makes up for through offering what only SA/Africa offers to golf - which is golf with serious wildlife around. I have not played Pezula but people speak very well of it.

As for the country, well i always try not to oversell, but I have yet to meet the tourist who has not loved their visit. And with this itinerary there is no excuse because it takes in enormous variety - the Indian ocean city of Durban, some Garden Route beauty, Cape Town which is as beautiful a city as any, and a great wildlife experience through going to Mala Mala which is a very celebrated resort.

South Africa is less well known to Americans - it's far away! - but this should only make it more fascinating, and certainly there are some resonances with the American South. It is a complicated and challenging place, full of interest and hope, and this is a mouth-watering trip in prospect. Well done to Ben - fitting all of this into such a short period is a great achievement.

This will be a great trip, it will be very interesting to hear the thoughts on the traditional courses
like Humewood and Durban CC in comparison to the newer developements like
Leopard Creek, Pinnacle Point, Fancourt Links and Pezula.

There is such a great contrast between the courses as well, Linksland at Humewood,
Clifftop at Pezula and Pinnacle Point, Bushveld at Leopard Creek,
Tropical Dunes at Durban CC and Fancourt Links (not too sure how to describe the landscape).

Here's a taster on the trip from my album.

The 18th at the Links at Fancourt

The other side of the coin, weekday flags at Soweto CC

Thank you for the kind words, Ran and I (although mainly I  ;) ) put a lot of energy into finding the right balance of what has made the past GolfClubAtlas.com trips so great.

Obviously, with any of our trips, we have to see the best golf. After consulting with a few traveled folks, we determined that playing Pinnacle Point and Durban twice each was a must.

However, as with Banff/Jasper 04 (when Ran was still playing hickories to mask his ever weakening game ::) ), we have chosen a beautiful area of the world. Thus, there are many other reasons in addition to the golf to go on this trip (as the four wives who have signed up so far will hopefully attest after the fact). Personally, I am extremely excited about Kruger National Park. The chance to see the Big Five on safari is every adventurer seeker’s wish; the fact that we are staying in one of South Africa's (if not the world's) finest hotels here making it a dream come true.

Of course, several participants are already discussing adding a few days to either end of the trip to match their own desires. Be it more time in Cape Town or to head to Sun City or over to Victoria Falls, people can customize the trip as they see fit. For those whose appetites that need to be whetted further, I will leave you with a photo from Mala Mala, which is not one of the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo). If you look past the zebra, you might barely be able to see Ran looking for one of his patented quick duck hooks.
