Bloomfield, Conn., muni looks great
« on: June 27, 2002, 06:33:28 PM »
Pardon me if I sound like the proud poppa, but if Doak is allowed to post running commentaries on his works in progress and folks can track Rustic Canyon on line, then our not-so-little little muni effort in Bloomfield, Conn., deserves some attention, too.

Wintonbury Links GC, designed by Pete Dye and Tim Liddy, construction by Supreme Industries of Harwinton, Conn., shaping by Tom Webber, construction management by GMI, and with grow-in superintendent Greg DuBois already on board, is looking unbelievable. Six holes virtually completed with drain tile, six holes rough shaped and the other six all grubbed and ready for more shaping. I've been out there every day I've been in town, which is easy as I live only two miles from the first tee and have been involved since its inception seven years ago.

Great transitions, amazing long views, no houses to be seen anywhere, with great vistas of farm-like land, wooded hills, and a half-mile long reservoir pond that comes into view on three long lakeside holes.

We're aiming to get the grass in the ground in September and start playing in summer 2003. But we could play six of the holes tomorrow in the dirt - like those old construction photos of Bobby Jones at ANGC.

I'll see if I can get digital images posted - will have to learn the new technology to do so. We're 7 miles south of the Hartford Airport. Tours available.

Brad,

Great to hear things are shaping up nicely.  I'd bet that Tommy would be happy to help you in posting pics here, which I'm sure most of us would enjoy seeing.

Brad,
I can recall your early articles about the possibility of this course.  I'm excited for you and it is quite apparent that you are grinning from ear to ear as you tapped on the keys to enter your post.  As one involved in the industry it is exactly what you have written that endears each architect to this profession.  It is the outcome of the torturous process that always brings a smile.  Just one note, hitting shots from the dirt is rather challenging.  Pick it clean!

Sorry to go a little off topic, but what's the status of the Gil Hanse-Nick Faldo course in CT?  Public or private?  Is it being built now?  Where is it located?

Congratulations! I do remember that you spoke often of this project at Augusta even when you should have been celebrating the book award you received from the USGA! It is wonderful to hear that the course may be all that you imagined. This has been a great year for you! Whats next?

Did you require Mr. Dye, Tim, and Tom Webber to memorize your "Design Manifesto of the 21st Century" (Golfweek: 3/8/02)?  ;)  I have recently heard alot of great things about Tom Webber!  And am I mistaken, but didn't you have Bill Coore up to look at the muni for any reason?

Do send me a few digital shots of the muni, and I will be glad to post them for you!!

Dunlop, you are, for once, mistaken. We have enough partners in this crime not to have to bring in others. Bill Coore has never seen the project. But he, like everyone else, is welcome.

First green, 373-yard par-4

Looking south at 2nd hole on left and 11th hole on right, with Talcott Mountain on right of site

from tee to green of 450-yard, par-4 14th hole, alongside reservoir

Could this be one of the first shapers in Golf that actually holds a Phd? Absolutely!

Pete's been out here half a dozen times, most recently two weeks ago for a two-day visit. His chief design associate, Tim Liddy, has been on site two dozen times and since construction started in late-March has been there every two weeks. Their hand-picked shaper, Tom Webber, is doing the detail work. I'm in close contact with all of them and stop by every day I'm in town.

Brad- I was wondering what the structure is going to be at the course. I assume it's a municipal, so if I'm wrong please correct me.

And if it is a Muni, what stop gaps are in place to avoid the pitfalls many of the more established Muni's have suffered? i.e maintenance and fiducuary fiction, advisory committees, whatever.

What will the green fees be?

Good question. We're trying to create an oversight committee to manage the golf course and make sure it doesn't generate into a muni. With total development costs of $11.5 million, we have to assure a steady stream of good play to pay for the project.

Details need to be worked out, but I suspect the resident green fee for walkers will be in the $35-$40 range and about $55 or so for non-residents. That's my estimate. We'll see, it has yet to be determined. There's no question that the folks hired to oversee development and grow-in, a firm called GMI out of Jacksonville, Fla., is experienced in such matters and knows how to preserve the integrity of such a place.

Great dirt! Unbelievable wetlands. Great telephone wires.

When will this great and unbelievable course be eligible for Golfweek's Top 100?

For $35 walking, I'll take telephone wires and various other sundry elements.

Brad, what is the rough breakdown on the $11.5MM developement costs? How many rounds do you expect to do? Thanks in advance.
