Dixie Cup Still Open For Registration!!!
« on: July 15, 2008, 05:54:15 PM »
Per John Cullum...

Dixie Cup V will be in Brooksville Florida. The scheduled dates are October 18 and 19.

10/18 we will tee up at World Woods Pine Barrens in the a.m. with an open afternoon.

10/19 will be at Dunes Golfers Club (f/k/a Dunes at Seville) in the a.m.

Rolling Oaks is already booked for a Junior event both days, but it is anticipated that afternoon times will become available on both Saturday and Sunday.

Costs at World Woods will be $50.00 for the first round of the day and $30.00 for any additional round same day on either course. The short course is available for the bargain rate of $10.00 walking (one of the best bargains in golf). These rates include tax and cart if desired, walking is permitted.

The fee at Dunes is not yet set, but will likely be lower than WW.

Lodging is available at the following nearby hotels (these are the closest hotels to WW, and the HI Ex is relatively new, and amenities are nearby):

Holiday Inn Express,
14112 CORTEZ BLVD.
BROOKSVILLE, FL 34613
352 597 4540
Rate around $90/night

Comfort Inn Weeki Wachee
9373 Cortez Blvd
Weeki Wachee FL
352 596 9000
Rate around $77.00/night

Hotel rates are subject to change, and no advance arrangements have been made. October is considered off season but we will be competing with the Junior Tour participants for lodging. We can probably negotiate a group rate once we have a feel for how many will be making the trip to this incredible part of the State of Florida.

This schedule is very firm. It has been coordinated around the aeration and overseeding schedule, and October is booked every weekend with events at World Woods. We have conferred with the World Woods superintendent and he has promised to work with us on preparation of the course, and he assures us he can have things in fine shape in late October. World Woods had been reputed to be suffering from poor conditions, but their new super has made dramatic improvements in the last 3 years. It is in the best shape it has ever been and gets better every year of late. Dunes has been closed for about 18 months and is planning on reopening in June after a large scale renovation. I walked the course about 4 weeks ago and see no reason it should not be ready to open come June, and by October I am confident it will provide a wonderful golf experience for us. Dunes truly is a hidden gem, and deserves to be seen by this august body. Tom Doak has been meaning to get over to Dunes for about 20 years now and we are hopeful he will be joining us to finally avail himself of this opportunity.

Satellite golf is abundant nearby, with Brooksville CC high on the list with a recent renovation by Bobby Weed including the construction of 3 new holes in and out of a limestone quarry. Pete Dye's Southern Hills Plantaion is on the south side of Brooksville, and Black Diamond Ranch is about 40 minutes up the road. There is also some new course over around Clermont on lake Apopka that a few of you may have heard of, its about an hour away.

IMPORTANT NOTE: WORLDWOODS REQUIRES A NONREFUNDABLE 50% DEPOSIT. THE DEPOSIT IS FULLY CREDITED TO THE GROUP, EVEN IF FEWER THAN RESERVED SHOW UP. IN OTHER WORDS, IF WE BOOK 30 TEE TIMES WE HAVE TO PUT UP $750.00 NONREFUNDABLE, BUT IF ONLY 15 SHOW UP, IT'S ALL GOOD.

TO SECURE YOUR SPOT YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY A $25.00 DEPOSIT. A SMALL PRICE FOR SUCH A FANTASTIC EVENT ON WORLD CLASS GOLF COURSES.

Just 23 people committed so far?  Last year's Dixie Cup was my first GCA event & I enjoyed it even more than I expected.  It's so much more fun discussing architecture in person and the course lineup & costs are too good to pass up.

The registration page lists 24 signed up, and I know of a 25th who signed up last week but hasn't been added yet.

Many people can't sign up (commit) that far ahead of time.  Aren't there usually some late commitments at these events?

Keep in mind the financial commitment is at most $25.  The organizers do have to make tee times pretty far in advance so we can have a block of groups.

The next person who signs up I'll gladly pay their $25 deposit as it's been paid already (one of my buddies, Mr. Hamilton, had to cancel yesterday.)

I've been fortunate to play 3 rounds at Pine Barrens this year and it is so good. October should be even better I imagine and I'm looking forward to DC5.

Also, a Bucs home game that Sunday night.

Mayhugh:

I noticed a JMay won the Labbance auction for Sugarloaf.  You like your Dixie Cup cake with extra icing, eh?  ;D  You're a machine.

The late commitments usually even out with the last minute cancellations!

I've unfortunately learned that I will not be able to attend in October even though I previously signed up and paid the deposit.

I'd be happy to transfer my $25 on to someone else if they'd like to join the party.  Let me know if there is a taker and we can arrange through John for you to take my spot.

Some fine detective skills there!
I think I'm saving Sugarloaf for next year, though.

Jerry:

Absolutely I'm serious.  Welcome aboard Dave.

Now who's gonna sign up next?  Tim Bert's spot is up for grabs.

Get em while they're hot!

Mike is on the list of registrants (unless he cancelled).  The link is above for those who want to see who's registered (as of a week ago).

I'm not only signed up but will be there to kick some Talesnick butt (which is much smaller than it used to be since he's lost so much weight).

By the way, I just made a reservation at the Comfort Inn at Weekie Watchee and the rate if you are over 50 is $54 a night, hopefully that includes a private bath ;D

Sadly I have to prove Mike Whitaker right - he said long ago when I first signed up that this would happen - but like Tim Bert I too have to bail.  Budget constraints put the kibosh on my work trip.  SO... please do de-register me - or tell me how to do so - and my $25 can go to beer money for the group.

If no one took me up on my offer for free registration then my $25 can go to the beer fund as well.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to go.  Glad to contribute my $25 for a good cause, however.

Unfortunately, I'm no Pat Mucci when it comes to playing golf in the face of physical discomfort and health problems.   My back simply can't take the stress of multiple rounds in a short time.  I went to Dixie last year with the same back pain problem and got through it.  But, this year the price in pain has gone up exponentially.  I played men's club yesterday, one week after my last round which followed 3 days of pain.  I'm flat out miserable again today.  I hope to continue to ratchet up the guts to absorb the pain to play once in a while.  But the ratio of pain to pleasure of golf is out of whack now.

I'm out, donate my $25 to a couple of pitchers of beer...  :-\ :-[

Messrs. Golden, Talesnick and Kluger will be arriving very late on Friday night so feel free to give us the last tee times on Saturday...

By the way, Rolling Oaks is wide open for tee times for anyone who wants to stay over and play on Monday-greens fees are $40
