Who can hit the 8th green at Pebble?
« on: July 15, 2008, 10:23:29 AM »
From the small green thread - it was noted that the 8th green is 2,500 sft - thanks JWL.
I've never played Pebble.
Who can hit that shot?

Where has everyone hit thier approach?
What have y'all scored on #8?

Cheers

Played it twice -- hit a high fade into the cove the first time with a 7-iron; the second time I hit the greenside bunker short and right of the green. I was pretty happy with that one.

Mike,

If one has the length off the tee to hit a mid-iron shot to the green it is not a formidable problem. The trick is to keep it on the green, in tournament conditions the green surface can be quite firm and the ball can take a huge bounce into trouble.

Playing from the back tees last year, hit hybrid and then a 5 iron to 15 feet below the pin, followed by 2 putts for a par.

To say I was somewhat relieved is an understatement.

There was a period, about a decade ago, where I parred this hole seven straight times, each completely different. Only one of those times did I have a two-putt par. I've chipped in for par from the back, I holed a shot from 40 yards out, I've hit into the canyon and one-putted, I've made long putts, and great chips.

The key to playing the eighth hole well is to be more lucky than good.

Mike, The shot is not as intimidating as it is cool.(WFC)
The play from 165, narey a breeze is for the soft fade aimed at the left edge. The shot plays apprx. 7 yards downhill. 90% of all GIR's are on the left side nd/or front.
In weather, the play is to miss short. Left side green high is an acceptable miss any day.

From farther back the misses are the same, except a miss short anywhere near green front is a great shot.

The absolute highest mojo, trust, counter intuitive nature occurs when the wind is howling from behind and from the right.

I played Pebble once, so long ago that it cost $75 (it was 1982).  I hit the green with a 3-iron (it was 1982) for my first par of the day.  I made but a few more and shot one of the worst rounds of my life.  The beauty of the place went by mostly unnoticed that day.

Once.

HIT aiming stick with drive. Kinda killed the drive.

Had God-knows-how-much to green. 220? Lots, anyway.

Hit 3-wood over cove. Best shot of life.

Beautiful draw that landed 3 feet from pin. Scooted up green to about 20 feet above hole.

Breathed on ball.

10 feet past.

Three-putted.

Adrian, at least you're consistent :P.  3 iron, 8 iron to back of green, pin in front.  2 putt 5 (1st putt went off the green!).

I could definitely hit it.  I could probably even do it by my 3rd shot ;).

I holed a 6 iron for 2.

What made it even better is that I was playing with the Head Pro from my place and 2 other friends. The Head Pro makes an unimpeachable witness.

I was all excited to post my up and down for par  from the collar area and then I see this.  :'(

have hit the green 2 times out of 5.

I was there in the gallery all day on Saturday in 2000 for the US Open when it was firm and basically, none of the pros could hold that green.  Sounded like a ball hitting a cartpath all day.

My one time I've played it, I hit a 4-iron that took one bounce in the neck just short of the green and hopped up onto the front.  From there I 2-putted for par.  It was my biggest highlight of the day.

Had I bounced it up on purpose, I would say that's how you want to play it.  But I can't do much of anything on purpose.   :)

I think 8 is one of the great par fours anywhere. I used to hit a 3 wood followed by a 4 iron 7 out of 10 times. It is such a cool shot to hit a 4 iron fade and have the wind hold it and try to land it just short or on front 25% of the green to hold it. I think now I might hit a 3/4 driver and long iron or recue now. lol

Mike your point is good about the green size for a strong 4 like 8 is. I think the downhill aspect combined and uniqueness of the drive and second shots make it a worthy hole to discuss even if not sitting on a cliff on the Pacific Ocean.

I remember being long, over the green, on several occasions.

Then it's like chipping down the hood of your car and trying to stop the ball by the hood ornament.  :o

I was -1 after 7 holes but didn't hit a great drive and was left with over 200 left. I hit a 5-wood that faded a bit too much and ended up on a tuft of grass about 15 feet down the cliff. I climbed down, hacked the ball back up, chipped on, and made a 5.

Ended up shooting 80 though, it was all downhill after that.

I hit a 3-iron from 219 yards and put it 20 feet, where I promptly two putted for par.

I remember that hole well, it's spectacular.  It was also the most crazy hard second shot I've ever had to a green.  That green is REALLY sloped.

have played there probably 10 times - have hit anything from 3 wood to 6 iron - in fact on back to back days hit 5 wood on day 1 and 6 iron on day 2 - the same 2 days - hit sand wedge and 7 iron into #7- to give one an idea of what the wind was doing.

have parred it probably 50% of the time and hit the green 4 or 5 times out of the approx 10 times i have played it.

once hit a 5 wood off the tee through the fairway, took a drop and hit a 5 iron to 6 feet and made an all world par. have also made 5,6,7,and 8 there as well.

It is my favorite hole on the course.

Ok, here is my story....

My two friends were in a group a few holes ahead (which hole goes behind 8 green?) and I hit a fine tee shot and had 190 in from the fairway...topped my 3 iron over the cliff...took my drop and just then my friends appeared walking down the hole behind the 8th to watch me hit my next ball (a 5 iron) to about 2 inches...they went nuts thinking I had just made a birdie when in fact I had just secured a 5.  Oh well, I came clean after the round when we went over the scorecard.

In 1970, it was only my second, no third, round of golf in a year. I forgot one in Australia. Championship tees. My second shot ended in the bunker just past the abyss. With no room for a swing I putted to the center of the trap. Then a long bunker shot to 5 feet and a one putt bogey

I pushed my drive right next to the cliff and had a 5 wood in that was a career shot -- hit into the bank short right to a front pin that looked to be coming in perfect to take the steam off it-- unfortunately there is a sprinkler head right there and my career shot turned into a long downhill bunker shot and a good bogey instead of what I always have believed would have been a birdie. My only time playing the 8th was similar to Buck's just mentioned.  Even though the caddy told me to hit it "that far left" off of the tee my mind and body just kept wanting to hit it right, it was a very uncomfortable shot for me.  I hit 3-wood off the tee to the far right, almost to the cliff, and had to hit a 5-wood over the chasm, which I did, to just left of the green.  Chipped on, two putt bogey.  The shot over the chasm was really cool though, and every time I see a picture of the 8th looking back from the green towards the fairway I can think of that shot I hit that had to carry the whole way.
So bad it's good!
