County Down's 9th:A Par 3!
« on: July 09, 2002, 03:47:00 PM »
An old photo of the blind par 3 that was the 9th hole at Newcastle.  In the 20s (forgotten exact date) Harry Colt pushed the green way back and made the hole as it is today.

PS  Colt also added the current par 3 4th hole. He resited the 8th green and rebunkered that hole too;  and finally, he resited the 11th and 18th greens to their current postions.

Actually, taking another look at that green, I'm not sure if it is the defunct blind par 3 green, or the current 10th?   :-[

Perhaps the course originally only had 8 holes for the outward loop?  Which would make the current 10th into the 9th when that photos was taken (1913).

Based on the location of the clubhouse, doesn't it have to be today's 10th green? Of course, that begs the question as to where is today's 11th tee - is that group standing on it?

Yes my mistake.  Ooops!

I'll try and find a proper photo of the old blind par 3.

Ran-

It looks like you are right but could it be 11 green or 8th green.

These ideas are based on the current layout but who knows.

The arch. looks not too far off and from that angle it could be even be a green situated in 18th fwy. or 11th.  Nice to know if existing layout is current with 1900's layout as pic.
