unidentified Princeton, NJ course from 1924
« on: July 12, 2008, 10:07:57 AM »
The Hagley Library shows a picture on their web site labeled as an unidentified golf course.  It is from 1924 and supposedly taken in/near Princeton, NJ.  It looks to be next to a very majestic church and/or school.  Does anybody know the name of this course?  Is it still around?

Springdale (formerly Princeton) Golf Club.  I don't think Flynn worked on it until later in the 20s.
That building is the Princeton Graduate College. The course is still around.

Joe,

Great photo.

You should send it to Springdale.

It would help them understand the roll that trees played in 1924 versus today.

SPDB, thanks for the info!  You are spot on.  Here is the info from the Springdale web page:

In the fall of 1895, the Princeton Golf Club – now Springdale Golf Club – was formed by the alumni, faculty and undergraduates of Princeton University. A nine-hole course was laid out in a large field known as "Stockton Woods" to the west of the old race track at the lower end of Bayard Lane. The course opened for play in 1896, and the first tournament was held a year later. Work was started on a new nine-hole course that opened for play in March 1902. The old course on "Stockton Woods" was then abandoned, and the existing 18-hole course was opened on June 1, 1915. The corse, as laid out by Gerald B. Lambert, was substantially the same as it is today. Well-known designer William Flynn, who created Huntingdon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania, reworked some of the course's features in 1928.

Patrick,

Are you in my camp by saying trees should play NO ROLE on courses?

Joe,

This is the golf course that Hugh Wilson was involved in building, and where he became Chair of the Green Committee in 1902.   It was nine holes during his days as a Tiger.
