Aerial of the Day #141 - 10 Jul 2002
« on: July 10, 2002, 07:17:10 AM »
Who woulda thunk?  651 views so far for yesterday's AOTD,
most likely a record.  I guess because it's a course where the
opinions can be polar opposites.  I've shown a good chunk of
the best courses in the country, and PGA West -Stadium gets
the most views.  Go figure.

Today's course has generated it's own discussions on it's
merits, not only on this site, but in the media, because it has
one large organization in golf on it's side (pocket?).

Someone at this course thinks this is Nirvana.

This is the first aerial shown in this state, and I bet most of
you pronounce the city this course resides incorrectly, just as
many mispronounce Norfolk, VA.

Without reading the intro, it might have taken some time to figure out, but there are two obvious features giving it away.

Has it never generated discussion, because we know where that discussion would go?  Does anyone have anything nice to say about the course?  If so, I have not heard it.

The guy who won here recently, a real slugger and
thoroughbred, duked it out in dramatic fashion with a virtual
unknown.

Point that ball into the hole.

This was the 3rd leg of a "Quadruple Crown".

Does anyone know the story
about how the golf organization and
this course came together?  What was
their rationale behind the deal?  Was it
purely financial?

Did Trevor Denman and Tom Durkin call the action as the
slugger and unknown came down the stretch?  ;)

I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

Ben,

Every year we have a club match against this course and it has many good features for everyday play...some nice things to say:

It identified a worthy champion...(for the Billy Casper bashers)

It has one of the best shoe guys in the buisness.

The membership and PGA are very generous with tee times.

The caddie program is in place and working.

The par fives are fun.

A couple of short par fours are fun.

For people who hate trees on the 15th I hit the ball through the trees into the middle of the 16th fairway and had an open shot...I would say the tree management is excellent for this type of course.

Who could ever play the 18th and not wonder how the hell that ball rolled down the hill on its own....fun.

It just makes for a very pleasent day in one of the great states of the Union.

Ok, I am slower than molasses.  It took me till JakaB's post to get this.  Duhhhh....

I can concur re this being one of the great states in the Union.  My family celebrates it on a daily basis - my inlaws were born and raised there and we worship at the shrine of the state's most famous college basketball team.

Huckster,

When you said your family celebrates this state on a daily
basis, I thought you were going to say "with it's famous
sourmash".  :D

This course apparently is not as Crum-y as some say.

Stay at the Galt House if in town.

Scott, that's only semi-daily!  Oh yes, that product of the state is held in VERY high regard, make no mistake about it.  My lack of education in the area darn near precluded the marriage... that's been fixed since the wedding day, thankfully.  ;)

This is Valhalla, the "midwest home of the PGA of America",
in Louisville, KY, designed by Jack Nicklaus.  Or at least the
PGA of A owns it, or runs it, or something.  The club is "in
their pocket", so to speak.  Valhalla hosted the 1996 and
2000 PGA Championships.

The 2000 PGA Championship was won in thrilling fashion by
Tiger Woods over Bob May in extra holes.  1996 was won by
Kenny Perry or Mark Brooks, I forget.  Media wondered if
course was worthy of a major.

other clues include:

Valhalla is Norse (i.e., "Thor","Vikings"), and translates
figuratively to "Nirvana"/Heaven, though not literally, I think.

First aerial shown in Kentucky

Louisville is pronounced "LOO-a-vul", not "LOO-ee-vill",
Norfolk is "NOR-fik", not "NOR-folk".

"slugger" = Louisville Slugger bats

"thorougbred" = horse racing as in Kentucky Derby/Churchill
Downs in Louisville

"3rd leg of Quadruple Crown" referred both to Triple
Crown/Kentucky Derby (yes, I know Derby is first leg), and
Tiger's 3rd major victory in a row of 4 he would eventually
win.  I liked that clue.

"Point that ball into the hole" referred to Tiger's
pointing/following the ball into the hole for birdie on 1st hole
of 3-hole playoff.

Kentucky sourmash (yes, Tenn is famous for it, too).

"Crum-y" = long time U of Louisville coach Denny Crum.

Galt House is nice hotel in downtown Louisville.
