My dad's trip to San Antonio...
« on: July 03, 2008, 03:20:41 PM »
Gentleman -- My dad is planning a short getaway with mom to San Antonio later in the summer (end of July probably). Should he go play Brackenridge Park or Pecan Valley? Or, any other thoughts. Thanks, in advance.

Tony,

I wish he was going in late October or November.  Brack is closed for renovation and will reopen in late October or early November.  The construction is complete and they should be finished grassing next week.

Tony,

Brack will not be finished with the renovation yet (scheduled OCT 2008), I'm very anxious to see the results.

Pecan Valley is under new management, and is already showing signs of life. Everything is improving there. I played about six weeks ago and the conditions were the best they have been in years.

Within 5 minutes of Pecan is Art Schaupeter's Republic. A good change of pace course with wide corridors, interesting greens and fine conditions.

A double dip in one day would be about $100. Solid value for 36 on those courses.

Thanks guys. My dad -- with his fake left hip -- won't be playing 36 in a day, so it looks like Pecan Valley would be a decent choice. I just went to BP's website and it's does show closed. Any other good options you would place above PV -- though, my dad will love seeing the PGA stuff there as well, I'm sure.

Another good option, half an hour up the road, is Keith Foster's Bandit in New Braunfels.

And New Braunfels is an excellent short visit from San Antonio.

Another solid Keith Foster choice is the Quarry.

After two visits, I have decided Pecan Valley is just not that exciting.  Do you all really love it?  The Quarry back nine is very interesting and I enjoyed a place called Canyon Springs more than Pecan Valley as well.  La Cantera is also fun.

If you can get him on San Antonio CC it is a very good course and somewhat under the radar.

Best Publics to play IMO:  Pecan valley is usually in good shape.  I thought The Republic was a very good value.  The Resort Course at La Cantera is fun if you want to spend some money.  IMO I thought these choices were better than The Quarry.  But I also have heard nothing but good things about The Bandit.

If you can get on:  San Antonio Country Club is great.  Oak Hills is even better.  Up the road 30 minutes is Cordillera Ranch, very good and worth the drive to play on Bentgrass.

I thought the Bandit was a good solid course with one exception - the holes are named on the scorecard.   One par 3 is called "Redan," which was pretty funny as there was absolutely Redan-like about the hole.  It was sort of like the owner heard that "Redan" was a famous par 3 and said to himself, "Why not?"   ??? ;D
