This is Valhalla, the "midwest home of the PGA of America",
in Louisville, KY, designed by Jack Nicklaus. Or at least the
PGA of A owns it, or runs it, or something. The club is "in
their pocket", so to speak. Valhalla hosted the 1996 and
2000 PGA Championships.
The 2000 PGA Championship was won in thrilling fashion by
Tiger Woods over Bob May in extra holes. 1996 was won by
Kenny Perry or Mark Brooks, I forget. Media wondered if
course was worthy of a major.
other clues include:
Valhalla is Norse (i.e., "Thor","Vikings"), and translates
figuratively to "Nirvana"/Heaven, though not literally, I think.
First aerial shown in Kentucky
Louisville is pronounced "LOO-a-vul", not "LOO-ee-vill",
Norfolk is "NOR-fik", not "NOR-folk".
"slugger" = Louisville Slugger bats
"thorougbred" = horse racing as in Kentucky Derby/Churchill
Downs in Louisville
"3rd leg of Quadruple Crown" referred both to Triple
Crown/Kentucky Derby (yes, I know Derby is first leg), and
Tiger's 3rd major victory in a row of 4 he would eventually
win. I liked that clue.
"Point that ball into the hole" referred to Tiger's
pointing/following the ball into the hole for birdie on 1st hole
of 3-hole playoff.
Kentucky sourmash (yes, Tenn is famous for it, too).
"Crum-y" = long time U of Louisville coach Denny Crum.
Galt House is nice hotel in downtown Louisville.
