Papago Update
« on: July 03, 2008, 07:43:03 AM »
We in Philadelphia can only dream that something like this will happen at Cobbs Creek:

www.azcentral.com/sports/golf/articles/2008/07/02/20080702golfpapago.html
"Some of us worship in churches, some in synagogues, some on golf courses ... "  Adlai Stevenson
Hyman Roth to Michael Corleone: "We're bigger than US Steel."
Ben Hogan “The most important shot in golf is the next one”

I hope they are following Forrest's recommendations and taking down all those trees that block the views of the surrounding terrain.  ;)

Bill,
I suspect they will follow far more than just Forrest's recommendations for the trees.  From what I know, they are basically using Forrest's master plan as the basis for all their work.  Forrest didn't work at Augusta National so he was apparently disqualified for doing the implementation  ???

By the way, someone should explain to Mr. Fuller that Bell did not design Riviera  ;)

I don't have the time to find it right now but I posted a link about a week ago. They are only taking down 200 dead or dieing trees right now. Replacing the rest with natives when the other die.

Thanks for posting that Steve.

Other news of the renovation:

The Summer 2008 issue of the Arizona Golf Assn. quarterly journal has a story and photos.  They do put the magazine online, but unfortunately only after the next print issue is published.

The photos give a hint of some of the extent of the tree removal that will open up the vistas of the neighboring buttes.

Online, at the AGA site is a progress report dated May 20:
http://www.azgolf.org/livelearnplay/articleDetails.asp?Category=31&Article=66

And some photos (unfortunately small):
http://www.azgolf.org/livelearnplay/articleDetails.asp?Category=31&Article=68

There is also a write up by Brad Klein in Golfweek's June 11 municipal golf issue:
http://www.golfweek.com/business/coursemanagement/story/popago-feature-061108

Now I'm going crazy because somewhere I read about the changes to the par 5 first,  moving the green to the right to bring the pond into play and make more of a risky 2nd shot if going for it in two.  I thought it was mentioned in the AGA article, but I just read it twice and didn't see it.  ???  Now I'm concerned because I thought I was keeping track of this stuff...

I have been planning to try to get over there with my camera but it's been so freekin hot...   Perhaps if I call Ed Gowan and tell him I'm representing GCA.com I can get a guided tour?

That was why I added the  ;)

My round with Forrest at Papago earlier this year showed just how familiar he is with that nice old course.

Not only do they (the City of Phoenix) have the original plans drawn by Wm. F. Bell, but they were part of our Master Plan work. They also have several of the note pages that Arthur Jack Snyder left while he oversaw the field work. While you cannot restore/renovate using old plans, they can be quite revealing. I thought this was an interesting comment in the article.

Like I said to my daughter when she consoled me after learning that we would not do the work — "It's OK, I plan to be here when it needs work the next time..."
