Did the author of the article suffer a head injury between writing the sentences about no radical changes & lengthening and a few sentences later when he spoke about making sure it was altered as directed the next day?

"This article does not report on the discussion or what happened over night between Old Tom & Shaw and we do not have a clear understanding from this report of what exactly the following statement means “make sure that when it was altered as he directed as much as possible would be made out of it” but clearly the meaning would suggests that the course would be much improved. Just by lengthening several holes would not in my opinion make that type of difference and warrant that comment."

Is this conjecture on your part or have you found a transcript of this supposed conversation?

What was discussed and agreed overnight? We will just have to
wait and see. Let’s not forgetting that Old Tom was Shaw's guest
at Lahinch.

What was supposed to be a thread about the joy and jubilation one experiences whilst playing Lahinch has descended in to yet another history argument...

I am going to nominate the 6th hole as my favourite on the course... Strategic it is not... But everything else it is....

Sorry to have involved you in a history argument, just enjoy the course.

Tom and Rich,

Just thought I would share a bit of light but annoying humour with you.  3 years ago Graeme and myself designed and help build a course here in Norway.

About two months before opening the client sent out invites to us and our men for the opening.  I arranged to be there and our shaper and one of our finishers also managed to be there.

On opening day I was asked to hit the first tee shot off the first tee which I did...no I did not top the ball...

Anyway, here I am a year later working on the redesign/renovation of Stavanger Golfklubb (which is about a 2 hour drive from the course in question) and I walk into a bookshop.  On the shelf is the yearbook for the town where this golf course was built.  A quick look at the chapters and there is a whole chapter on the golf course and the opening.

I open up the book and yes you have guessed it....in the first paragraph:

"The course was opened on September blah blah by the Golf Course Architect Graeme Webster who also hit the first drive on the first hole"

Graeme was not even there on the day of the opening!!! He couldn't make it!

Moral of the story....don't always believe everything that is written in black and white.....

I agree. I see it a lot too. Thats why I look for multiple sourses - and in this case cited four contemporaneous sources giving credit to McKenna (and Shaw).
