Interesting Courses in Frankfurt, Germany
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:55:39 AM »
Traveling to Germany this weekend and have a free day on Sunday in Frankfurt.  Anyone know of an interesting course that I could play?

Looked in the "course by country" listing and didn't see Germany listed.

Mitchell,

Frankfurt Golf Club is a good course - parkland, close to the city, not too hard but fun and the site of several German Opens in the 80s.

I don't know of any other courses in Frankfurt but it's worth a game.

If you don't get a game there (pretty exclusive), then try Hanau-Wilhelmsbad. Sundays are generally very full around Frankfurt. If you don't mind travelling a little further, then you might have better chances, such as at GC Spessart near Bad Soden. If all else fails, you should be able to get a tee-time at GC Bad Vilbel, but it's not the cheapest venue.

I would take you around, too, but unfortunately I am not here on Sunday.

Whew.... just saw that Frankfurter is charging 100 Euro these days. In case you're on a budget, then Winnerod (60 Euro) and Idstein South (48 Euro) are good deals. Fun courses and you can get there in 45 minutes from Frankfurt.

If you want to play on Saturday, I'd be available.

A few months ago it was reported here that the Colt in the Frankfurter design had been redone by the same guy that redid Club zur Vahr. Photos reveal the same looking features at both courses; my bet is it's the same builder. Modern, loopy, machined looking bunkers.

Here is the link to the thread discussing Frankfurter and zur Vahr.

Ulrich,  Thanks for the offer but I'm arriving to Frankfurt at 6:00am on Sunday from Seville.  I have Sunday free and then I'm headed to Stuttgart on Monday.  Do most of these clubs you've recommended rent clubs, as I did not bring my own sticks?  If I travelled to Stuttgart on Sunday, are there any courses there you'd recommend in place of the Frankfurt courses?

Currently at the Frankfurt airport waiting for my flight to Seville.

I haven't played golf in Stuttgart, so I can't help you there. The city is located in a punchbowl and can get pretty stuffy. The courses I mentioned should all rent clubs, but better to ask beforehand.

The oldest club in Stuttgart is http://www.golfclub-stuttgart.com

Why not rent a Merc and travel to the *farthest* course? You could drive into France and play Bitche, which may be no good but worth the shirt!

Frankfurter GC is on the same side of the city as the airport. Roughly on the route to Stuttgart are:
St Leon Rot
Stuttgarter Solitude
Schloss Nippenberg

Tschüs,
Mark

Bitche is actually a nice course, I would definitely recommend it. But it'll take you 2-3 hours to get there from Frankfurt airport. Plus, if you're there you gotta see the Vauban citadel first, golf second.

The closest course to the airport is http://www.golfpark-bachgrund.de/index.php. It's a short course, full of dreadful alpinisations, but actually somewhat fun to play. I posted some pics here: http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,33679.msg673541.html#msg673541

You would be lucky to get a tee-time there on Sunday mornings, though. Late afternoon might work. Better chances at http://www.kiawahgolf.de (sic!), a flatter than flat and fairly long course. If you love to swing for the fences without fear of losing your ball, go there. The usually well-kempt greens are somewhat redeeming.

Frankfurter Golf Club is also close to the airport, but you would have to enter the city and cope with metropolitan traffic. Not too big of a deal on Sundays, though.
