Wow, and I have issues driving 30 minutes to play Gentle Creek, my home course now in north Texas.  I've done "Muny", once.  It would be fine with me if the U would sell the property for fair market value to the City of Austin and use the proceeds for some safe, decent student housing.  Then the "issue" of providing cheap golf to its citizens can be debated in a proper venue.

I will send out PMs to the suspected interested parties, but I'll post it here as well: Anyone interested in a round at Lions on Sunday, October 13th? It would be embarrassing to not get one group together, two would be better. I'm planning to try to make the time(s) as early in the morning as possible. I need to call next Tuesday to reserve times, so reply either in this thread or via PM...

To bring this back to the top, the Save Muny battle is still going on.

Latest news: A bill proposed to shift ownership of the facility from the University of Texas to the state parks department, which would make it a lot more likely that the course would be preserved (first article here: http://www.savemuny.com/news.html).

Unfortunately I haven't been out to Lions lately (haven't really played any golf at all, actually) but am interested to see how this will turn out...

I attended Crenshaw's press conference yesterday.  He is proposing to renovate the golf course IF the course is saved at all (long odds).  He would flip the 9s and go back to the original routing.  Not only were the 9s flipped but some holes changed direction.  They literally swapped tees and greens.


The corridors are there but new greens would need to be built and bunkers added.  Extensive tree work needs to be done too.


The entrance would also be moved from Enfield to Lake Austin and there would be a new clubhouse and new practice areas.


Est cost is $10-12M and would come from private funds.  Exciting to think of a new and improved Lions with Ben's fingerprints on it but it is really just a dream at this point.  Good to see him being more vocal on the topic.  He is so sweet and is out of his comfort zone criticizing things.  Funny part of the presser when discussing the first hole, which is terrible...he thinks for 10 seconds and you can tell he is grasping for the right words before settling on "not an ideal starting hole".  That drew lots of laughs.


Another interesting/funny part..Ben said he made his first hole in one at Lions on the 5th hole (now the 13th going the other way) with his mother's Patty Berg 5 iron.

Well given that the fight is just to keep the course open for now, I'd call it a dream with some ideas. But who knows where it would go.

$10-12 Million?  Is it just me or is this seem a little high?  How much is going towards course?  Clubhouse?
