Wilshire CC in Los Angeles is one of my favorites.
Olde York Country Club in NJ I think is a really nice hidden less known gem.
also really like Suburban Country Club in Union NJ.

I will second David's Suburban Golf Club nomination. Great little AWT design, but I'm biased since it's my former home course.
Fare and be well now, let your life proceed by its own design.

Bart and Andy,

I'm surprised neither of you mentioned Bear Slide in Cicero, IN.  Whenever someone asks me now where they should play in Indy, I always give them the top choices (Brickyard, Fort, Purgatory,etc.).  But I always throw in Bear Slide as the hidden gem of the area.

Another one that has not received much attention in the state yet is Champions Pointe.  If I ever get off of my lazy butt and post a write-up about it you will see why.  Very nice course in southern Indiana.

For national guys Bear Slide would be a good hidden gem, for locals I would recommend Royal Hylands.  Very fun greens and a few really neat holes.  Not in the same category as the other courses I've mentioned so far though.

Sean,

Agreed. Also some like Barona have become more well known over the past 6 years. If/when I recompile and update this list some editorial discretion will be exercised and some of these may well be excised...

Doug,

I thought you'd been around long enough to remember that this original HG list was compiled in mid-2001, when these courses were HG's, even on GCA.  It was discussion in the early years here that made 'discoveries' of these courses, some now ranked as Eastward Ho!, Lehigh, and Old Town are, and Barona was.

Twisted Gun.  Really does not look that dissimilar to the pictures posted of Wild Horse the other day....

Charlie, did you say you had played the little gem 'Briar Patch' at Beckley? Strange fairway grass, but a very fun layout.

I have recommended The KY State Park Trail too often already. Dale Hollow, Hidden Cove, and Eagle Ridge are great bargains. Come see.

Scott,

Yes I have been around that long, and yes this shows how "hidden gems" can become "known gems" by the passage of time.

Wild Hawk (Elk Grove, CA): Lots of interesting fairway undulations and central hazards, doesn't feel cramped despite small acreage, houses only along one border. Cheap (by CA standards).

Whoa. You're actually the first person I've heard say they like that course or compare it to anything like a "hidden" gem.

Ditto on Mt. Mitchell!  I'd like to add Boone GC in Boone, NC - an old Ellis Maples that has been redone and looks great.  Nice mix of holes and some rolling terrain.

Also would add CC of Johnson County in Smithfield, another Maples I think.  Neil Lancaster taught himself to play there.  Just a really fun, country golf course.

Thanks.

Gents:

Those who mentioned Grandote in La Veta, CO should note that the course really has never gotten back to the point where it was when it first opened. The faciity was especially noteworthy when it opened and I'm glad I had the opportunity to have played it then.

As an FYI -- the course, for a short time, was rated by GD among the ten best in the entire state. For my purposes, any so-called "hidden gem" can only be truly hidden when it has never been rated -- either statewide or nationwide.

Charlie Dusic:

I've played Twisted Gun and frankly it's remote location is more the issue for fame than the existing architecture. The course was designed by an amateur and it's a shame to have wasted such a site for such a low level design product. Twisted Gun is more "hidden" (thankfully) and less of a "gem" IMHO.

Chris Clouser:

Good call with Bear Slide -- gets little attention outside immediate 50-mile radius.

Mike Sweeney:

Also superb call on Morris County -- gets extremely little attention because of the top shelf architectural neighborhood it's in.

Bart, Andy, Chris:

We used to play the Peru Muni in a HS tourney... I haven't played there in a long time but remember it definately having a bit of quirk, and some fun elevation changes.

For the Central IN area, I'd nominate the following:
Wildcat Creek in Kokomo (plus it's just down the road from a famous gentleman's establishment)
Coyote Crossing in Lafeyette
Honeywell GC in Wabash (30 dollars all you can play on Mondays)
Meadowbrook GC in Anderson (short and sweet, not the greatest scenerey)
Killbuck GC in Anderson (its cheap, has some fun greens, and a handful of really good holes IMO)
and I'm in total agreement about Royal Highlands

This is great...Another Peru muni mention...the place will be able to raise their rate to $19 if we just keep it up.

I too have played Royal Highlands and enjoyed it.  I had forgotten all about it until Chris mentioned it.  Bear Slide is such a mixed bag with a couple of lousy holes...distinctly different front and back nines.  I played it about 20 times when I lived in Indy so I guess I didn't hate it.

Matt, when did you last play Grandote pardner? In my opinion the course, which I played when it opened and nearly every year since (including during its "dust bowl years"), is  very much back to where it was when it opened.

Matt--I can't be quite so dogmatic as you in tying "hidden gem" status to whether the course ever has been rated. Perhaps that's OK as a general proposition but Grandote Peaks is very much the exception. When was it rated? Its first year in 1997 or so? This fine course is so far off the radar screen NORAD can't find it! I prefer my definition of "hidden gem" (without the ratings qualification) and I'm sticking to it.

Paul,

Wildcat Creek is a good mention.
I haven't seen Meadowbrook in years, I hear Liddy's work there has helped it a lot.  It used to be a dump of a course.
Having grown up in the Anderson area, I played there and Killbuck a lot.
Coyote Crossing is another worthy mention.

For that matter, I think you could put about 40 courses from Indiana on this list.  Indiana is the Hidden Gem of public golf in the country in my mind.

Doug Ralston keeps hyping the Kentucky stuff, which I haven't seen, but for my money it would be tough to beat the Hoosier state.

My definition:  A course you play as an add on during a trip and enjoy better than many of the main attractions:

Jason, nice description!

I'm still fairly new on here so some of these may already be well known but , I liked Jason's description of a hidden gem, so thought I'd add a few? These are all worth a visit on any trip to play some of the more well known courses of this World...

1. Brora, yes I know most of you guys know it but when I mention it to most others I play golf with they have never heard of it? Find yourself playing Dornoch and you must venture this way!
2. Painswick, though I've seen it mentioned on here before? Find yourself heading for St Enodoc, Saunton or RND? (don't forget Burnham & Berrow!)
3. Cavendish, great Alister MacKenzie course, but again mentioned on here before I seem to recall? Perhaps as a detour from Notts or Alwoodley?

So not sure how hidden they are, but they are gems!
2023 Highlights: Hollinwell, Brora, Parkstone, Cavendish, Hallamshire, Sandmoor, Moortown, Elie, Crail, St Andrews (Himalayas & Eden), Chantilly, M, Hardelot Les Pins

Doug:

A few retorts are in order ...

I played Grandote on my way back from Black Mesa last year and it's nothing more than I described. I really liked the course when it first opened. But if you believe what's there now is the equivalent of what it was when it first opened -- then we disagree -- big time.

Doug, GD rated the course too high in my book and there's little doubt that even when it was at its finest it could not sniff cracking the top ten in Colorado now IMHO.

Allow me to explain my rationale in regards to the true meaning of "hidden gem." Any such course(s) must be literally invisible to the greater mass of golfers who certainly follow the ebb and flow of such courses when they open and come onto the scene. When Grandote first opened it certainly did that because as you opined it would be a great site for a NORAD base. Few people ever heard of La Veta -- then or now. However, once Grandote was rated top ten by Digest it stopped being "hidden" and was flying high in elite company. It's fall was sudden and from what I saw last years was only slowly coming back to where it was.

But just remember this -- the world of golf design -- especially in Colorado since Grandote first opened has evolved greatly. I would think you would know that better than most.

Chris, I'll take that challenge. Courses mentioned here in Indiana that I have played in liked.

1. Rock Hollow
2. Sultan's Run
3. Coyote Crossing
4. Trophy Club
5. Purgatory
are all among the best, but also worth a play
1, Royal Hyland
2. Meadowbrook.
Not mentioned and should
1. Buck Point
2. Belterra
3. Grand Oak
4. Prairie View

Now Chris, those 1st 5 would definitely be in a Kentucky Top 20, as might Buck Point. But I question if any would cut into the Top 5. Indiana does indeed have a larger array of good quality courses than poor Kentucky. But Kentucky is top-heavy with some real nice ones, and one so peculiar that some simply do not like it, while others come from far away regularly to play [ER].

Come see.

Matt,

A few rejoinders to your retorts are in order...

I think your rear view mirror view of Grandote when it first opened is a bit blurry. Yes it was a really fine course then and it is again now. But your lofty view of the course's beginnings are misplaced. I guess you realize that when you say GD rated the course too high.

We agree that there's no way it's top 10 Colorado now. And I agree that the world of Colorado golf has evolved big-time since Grandote opened. But what's that have to do with this discussion of the course in question?

I must again respectfully disagree with your definition of "hidden gem." I suspect there aren't too many people on this website (who, after all, are the real audience for this subject) have their 1997 or 1998 Golf Digest "Best of" issues lying around or refer to them. So what if this course appeared once on a state of Colorado list? Unlike, say, Pacific Dunes, it long since disapeared from the view of raters and readers, including readers of this site. We readers are trying to get a handle on worthy courses that, to use your words, are "literally invisible" NOW so we might think about seeing them if we are in the area.

Matt--Go back and read my definition, which I think is apropos of this topic. The intent here is to identify courses that are "Hard to find or relatively unknown to participants on this site, but a quality course with decent golf course architecture that is worth seeing if you are in the area." Tell me that Grandote Peaks doesn't fit that definition. If you want another definition, pardner, start another thread. [emoticon deleted in deference to Dan Kelly]
