Pat:

I'll answer from the local side of things first -- with the best 18 par-3 holes I have played in the Garden State -- otherwise known as Juursey to those outside the area.

Pine Valley / 5th hole & 10th holes
Plainfield / 11th hole
Forsgate / Banks 3rd, 7th, 12th and 17th holes
Essex County / 9th and 11th
Hollywood / 4th
Manasquan River / 15th
Montclair / 3rd (#4 nine)

That's a total of 12 holes -- I'll finish the remaining six later.

Most overrated ...

Baltusrol / Lower 4th

Most overrated ...

Baltusrol / Lower 4th

Matt,

Why do you feel the hole is overrated?  The green is basically three greens in one w/ the tiers and the bunkers long/water short requires a precise yardage.  Combine that with the setting and it is a world class par 3 IMHO.

Geoffrey W:

Try to think what I said in my entire post ... look at the names of the other candidates I mentioned. Many of them have received one-tenth of one percent of the attention thatthe 4th at Baltusrol Lower has received over the years.

Candidly, the stort of Trent Jones making an ace there is what really elevated the stature of the hole after his work there in the mid-50's.

It's a par-3 over water on a layout which has hosted several US Opens. So?

Trent did similar type holes -- venture to the 11th at Hominy Hill in Colts Neck and you'll seea variation of the same theme. I do concede the nature of the green but all in all the hole is not at the top tier level of other Tillie par-3's -- take the 10th at WF / West or the 17th at BB, to name just two quick examples.

Matt,

I have played all of the holes that you mention (HH, WFW and BB) and I would put the 4th right up there with them.  I think the tee shot in some ways is even more exacting than the Pulpit hole, but less so than BB.  The challenge at Bethpage is stopping the ball on the right tier of the blind surface with a long iron which has always given me trouble.  However, you can bailout long and have a reasonable shot from the back bunkers unlike the 4th at Baltusrol.  The back bunker at Baltusrol might be worse than dunking your tee shot if the pin is up front.  You have an easier time making 4 from the drop zone.

As an aside, I think HH is greatly underrated these days as a public option in NJ and would love to hear your thoughts on the course.
