For our newbies, and some of our less travelered oldbies, I thought we could give them a list of public courses which best represents the work of each architect, whether living or dead.

Examples of this would probably be:

Donald Ross-Pinehurst #2
Dick Wilson-Cog Hill #4
Pete Dye- Whistling Straits
Tom Doak-Pacific Dunes

Feel free to add a 2nd course to each architect if you feel it represents another significant difference in style or topography.

I thought I'd add several more now that I have a block of time:

Jim Engh-Lakota Canyon and Redlands Mesa
Pete Dye-Whistling Straits and Casa De Campo
Jeff Brauer-The Quarry at Giants Ridge
Stanley Thompson-Cape Brenton Highlands and Banff
Tom Fazio-Shadow Creek and Pine Barrens at WW
RT Jones, Jr-Spyglass
McDonald and Raynor-Old White
Flynn-Homestead
Alister McKenzie-Pastiempo
Raynor-Yale
Coore and Crenshaw-Kapula and Babdon Trails
Ken Dye-Paa-ko Ridge
Tom Doak-Pacific Dunes and Barnbougle Dunes
Tillinghast-Bethpage Black
Micheal Strantz-Tobacco Road and Royal New Kent
Baxter Spahn-Black Mesa
Schmidt and Curley-Oak Valley
Charles Clarke-El Campeon at Mission Inn
Steve Smyers-Southern Dunes
Jack Nicklaus-this is a tough one, I can't think of one????

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Hey Newbies,

Kyle says don't play Bethpage Blue. Don't even think about it. And most of all friends don't let friends play Blue!

Kyle's just miffed that a certain team with a "Go Blue" cheer has beaten his beloved Nittany Lions 650 times in a row.

Robert and David,
I grew up on San Clemente and am quite fond of it but it is nothing like it used to be.  All the contours have been taken out of the 1st fairway .  The 2nd is a shadow of itself.  The newish greens at 4 and 5 are bad.  And 7 , 8 and 9 have been altered terribly.
I think Brookside 1 may be better representation than San Clemente.
Also PLAY Hesperia for a really good look at unaltered work of teh other Bell.
Cheers
stan

When it comes to Bethpage I think Kyle nails it.  His ranking is the same as mine in terms of "fun to play".

Has no one mentioned Flynn yet?  I assume the Cascades Course at The Homestead is a no-brainer?  :-\

The Nicklaus Signature course in New Zealand is called Kinloch.  It is public and well worth  a visit.

I haven't seen Hurdzan. I think most here might agree on Erin Hills?

Of course Art Hills can gloat on magnificent Bay Harbor.  :D

Anyone try Ed Ault? Stonehaven? No! Dale Hollow!

Tim Liddy? Sultan's Run.

Keith Foster = The Harvester

Lots of 'lesser' designers deserve some note.

A real sleeper and a terrific course not mentioned yet is:

Stephen Kay  --               Links of North Dakota

for  big Jack,  wouldn't the Challenge of Manele be about his
      best public track?

Oklahoma's best publics...

Karsten Creek - by a landslide,  nothing else even close, however it is freakishly expensive.

And the rest... Chickasaw Pointe, Forest Ridge, Cherokee Hills

Pete Dye - TPC Sawgrass
Ted Robinson - Sahalee

Steve,

Sahalee maybe his best, but its private, best public I've played is Tokatee in Oregon.

Right - not public...  Tokatee is a great choice for Ted Robinson on the public side.

As a newbie, I would like to request that in threads like this one, that you expand responses and refrain form using too many acronyms if at all possible.  We can figure them out with some effort, but these posts are great since they don't require a 10 year history of lurking here to understand (i.e. the Marion Wars).

Anyway, this is probably a typical newbie problem, but I've not played any other tracks by Weiskopf and Morish, but can anyone think of a better public course by them than Forest Dunes, in Michigan?
