Building on the Stiles threads and my upcoming trip to Maine, I have to ask the question... Why isn't Prouts Neck better known?  It has to be the least recognized oceanfront course in the Northeast.  Its not even up as a candidate for Golf Digest Best in State in Maine!  I plan to play the course and judge for myself but take a look at the images below.

Played Prouts Neck along time before GCA was ever on my radar (early 90's).  I read the Van Stiles book to get some history (it has a great rendering of the course) and I am suprised that it is not more well known.

My only question is with the dunes holes coming so early in the round, could the routing been better?

I have not played it yet, and this weekend Mr Moore is taking me across state lines to Massachusetts. I drove past it last year, and I kind of got the feeling that Mr Moore got every great picture of the course.

I still want to play it for sure because well I am a Golf Club Atlas guy  but I don't think it is going to be the second coming of Maidstone.

I'm not looking for the second coming of Maidstone, I'm just looking for some name recognition.  I'd like to think I have at least heard of most of the major courses in the Northeast and I have never heard of Prouts outside of GCA.  I had to work HARD to find any information on the course at all when it was first mentioned by Michael, which I have a feeling is very much by design.

Even if that is every good photo of the course, I'll take my chances.   

Kelly - I'll let you know what I think after a play next month.  I am excited.

I'm amazed I haven't heard more about this place. It looks like it's well worth the time to play. Maine has such a beautiful coastline.

Great pictures.  Did you get those of the internet somewhere?

My brother and I played the course about 3 years ago.  We were the first two out in the morning and basically had the course to ourselves.  One of my best golf experiences.

As for not hearing more about Prouts Neck, the are extremly private even to the point where when my brother and I played, you could drive right by the course and not know it was there (unless you were looking for it).

Could it be the lack of length (just over 6000 yards)?

Good point.  I am sure that has contributed to its mystery along with the private nature of the club and its remote location to the rest of the country.  However, I don't think a 6050 yd., par 70 course on the water is too small to be recognized assuming the architectural quality is high (looks promising from the photos but I want to play it before I give my opinion).

I believe the course is still available to those who stay at the Black Point Inn.

Not a cheap little place, but in comparison to the big golf resorts, not bad at all...

I've been meaning to get to this course for quite a while!!
