Just a thought ,  Don't count out the private club options ... Houston has very low initiation fees ... If you are anywhere near Magnolia Creek , check out the Cannongate @ Magnolia Creek option.

Timber Creek is also an excellent option as well for public.

Somewhat downscale from MC & TC will be Southwyck and Clear Creek.

I am biased in favor of Magnolia Creek (original golf development / management company / partner ) ... If you like hard and fast , challenging green complexes , fast Tifeagle putting surfaces , all the length options you every wanted , great mix of 27 holes , wonderful practice facility , nice people ( ask  for Matt Stano ) , You'll love Mag Creek .

Having said that , I'm also biased in favor of the north side ... I'm @ Kingwood CC were you can pick an option of anything from 1 course in off times , to full golf on 5 courses.

If you can stand the heat , there are lots of options in H-town

Hard and fast at Magnolia Creek? ;D

Sam , I'll be the 1st to admit that in wet periods , the clay gets soggy ..... But in dry periods , that clay gets brick hard .... That 1st year was a constant barrage of people complaining " The greens are too hard , I can't get my Top Flite to stop"

Westwood is available for up to six months without an initiation.  I played on Monday and it was in fantastic condition.

Is he in Houston proper [sic] or out toward Sugar Land/etc.?  Private or public, and if the former, pls elaborate.

He says he is in between the two but closer to Sugar Land.

Well that's an easy run to Westwood on 59 then.  Just wait 4-5 months for the weather to return to something reasonable.   :)

Public Memorial, Blaketree National are both great in an ok kind of way. Cypresswood and Deerwood are solid as well. Deerwood is private actually. Champions is to me the class of the privates.

I'll second Kyle that Westwood is a great track. I'm a member at Brae Burn and I love it. Both have great membership deals.

Tiger's definitely right about Deerwood, but it's a pretty rough haul from the SW part of town. I live inside the loop (closer) and got sick of driving out there after about a year.

I know Old Orchard closed about a year ago.......that used to be a fairly decent cheap course......
There was a Norman course on the west side of town, Meadowbrook Farms, that was actually pretty decent.
Memorial Park is great if you can get a tee time, some really nice scenery jogging around the track in the spring too.

Does anyone know if the Falls in New Ulm is still open? I played there about 10 years ago, it was a really fun course, but out in the middle of nowhere and I wonder if it survived......

New Orleans, proud to swim home...........

Meadowbrook Farms is pretty decent. I heard that were trying to take it private before the everything went to hell.

Actually it's more like 3 years (!) for Old Orchard.  Was good, but never seemed cheap (not that it would be, given Ft. Bend County doubling its population in 15 yrs).

River Ridge did more for me than Meadowbrook, I guess, but neither overwhelmed me.

Also in the SW is Greatwood, which was OK when I played it forever ago (and apparently still cheap), but it is definitely cart / house golf

River Bend and Sugar Creek are running some membership specials -- both SW side courses.  I've never played either one though.

Best public in the Greater Houston area is High Meadow Ranch.  It's a haul but worth it.  Blackhorse South is a good second choice.

Played the Tradition Course at Cypresswood today -- an old favorite.  It's in good condition (what isn't with the amount of rain we've had in the last month) but the service is lacking and the greens fees are way too high for this market.  Rumor has it the place is for sale again.

Memorial Park is wildly overrated.  I've played that goat ranch 100+ times in my life.  I know it's almost blasphemy to say that publicly here in Houston but it's the truth.  There may be 3 or 4 interesting holes, that's it.  I would hate for a visitor to our city to be led out there with the expectation that's the best we have for daily fee.

Yep, I said it.  I have quite a few friends who are decent players that will agree with me as well.

Place Memorial in any other city and it's just an overrun muni.
