DRS Annual Meeting - Cape Fear and Wilmington Munie?
« on: May 12, 2008, 10:38:14 PM »
Did anyone make it to the Donald Ross Society Annual meeting in Wilmington, NC the weekend before last?  I couldn't go but it is my old stomping grounds and I wanted to hear about it.

Anyone,....anyone?

Pictures?

Brock,

Dont have photos to share but I did attend the DRS meeting and enjoyed my time at Cape Fear very, very much!  It was wonderful to see all the improvements to a course I love playing.  My first thought upon finishing the round was to try and play 18 more!

The muni was fun as well but as you can imagine, slow playing and rough in some areas.  That said, it is a tough golf course and you can see the improvements taking shape.  Apparently they have done some work to the collars which were growing in nicely.

It was a great weekend.

Would agree with the comments by Hart.    About 48 people or so, and it was fun playing both courses.

Hugh MacRae spoke at the dinner at Cape Fear CC and had many remembrances, one of which was being with his father at Linville, and standing next to Donald Ross as course changes to be made at Linville were discussed.

The Municipal had many interesting holes, especially those that offered some change in terrain, like no 3, 4, and 5.   Was able to play golf with Zack Kelly who grew up playing at the Municipal.  Had a great time. Was surprised that the fairways were overseeded but Zack said that has always been done.

Cape Fear CC was very interesting, and had a great deal more movement than I expected for a course near the beach.  A fun layout, many interesting holes, and challenging greens.  Conditioning was perfect.  Very, very good.    I had the same sentiment as Hart.......wonder if  I could skip the dinner and play until it is too dark to see.

I was dying to go to the event as I worked at Cape Fear all through college and have played probably 10% of my golf on that course.   I have not played the restored course yet but am dying to do so.  Walker Taylor started talking about getting it restored back when I was there in 1996.

I used to play the Wilmington Muni in the City Am every year and it was very fun as well.  It used to be a great value and an undiscovered gem.

Thanks.
