My dad never played golf. Last summer we were in cottage country together and I was heading off to play 18 at a modest local course. He seemed interested in coming, so I asked him. So, at 75 years old my construction worker dad played his first round of golf -- in fact, held a golf club in his hands for the first time. And you know what? He didn't whiff the ball once. Played with nothing but a 7 iron, made contact every time, and usually picthed it out there about 75 yards. We walked 18 holes, carried our bags. He was good on the geens, once he got the speed down. And he really liked that after your round you could get a couple of beers and sit on the patio.

By the way, the only tip I knew to give him was to imagine he was using a sledge hammer to knock down an old retaining wall (something he did for most of his life and I did for the summers working with him). You sure can't "cast" a 20lbs sledgehammer, and if your left wrist "breaks down" at impact with a retaining wall, you feel it for a month. It was a good tip - I'm gonna use it myself.
