Hell....why don't we just blow them all up?
« on: May 10, 2008, 10:20:11 PM »
....golf courses that is.

Actually we do it all the time, but its just a slow paced detonation that's hard to see except from reverse.

A golf course is more about a journey than a destination.

Its not a bonsai.

Funny, Paul ... I take more of the bonsai approach, and it's worked okay so far.

....or let me put it another way.

If any Architect ever tells you he has just nailed it....then you should run screaming for an exit.

Tom....I think that works fine as long as you are here to tend them.

Hell....why don't we just blow them all up? ....golf courses that is.

In my ongoing research into courses with a connection to Old Tom Morris, I have come across quite a few sites of old closed courses.

To stand back and look at these sites as they are today i.e. returned to farmland recently ploughed, or just an over grown strips of land between sea and dunes. Sites like Crawford, Colliestan and Uisguintuie where once thousands walked over the land and enjoyed a game or two of golf. Yet now they are empty and soulless, with no evidence of the entertainment they once gave. Knowing their demise in part was due to all those young men never returning from the two World Wars just leaves you with a deep sense of sadness. So your comment of ’blow them all up’ does not settle well on my shoulders.

A golf course IMHO should reflect the land and its surroundings, not look out of place and artificial, the reason why I keep on talking about ‘Land fit for Purpose’. If a course cannot work with the land then it should not be built.  But for commercial reasons we have compromise upon compromise forced upon us. Return these courses back to their natural state but not by blowing them up further destroying the natural balance.

Melvyn....I don't mean to offend yours sensitivities.

If you want, you can write off my comments as those of a brash Yank responding tongue in cheek to another thread.

.....but I do think your grandfather+ would appreciate and understand my comments. He sure wasn't afraid to blow up the fairways at TOC and make them double wide.

My kind of guy! ;)

It’s the word ‘blow them up’ that I not keen on when related to golf ::)

‘This golf course stuff is not..’  Mike, I’m surprised with you and that statement. What can I say, look at all the Merion post(s)? ;)

I have no problem Guys, but I do care and am keen to see golf flourish. Its all about enjoyment and fun – but the course plays a very important part in that equation.  8)

Melvyn....you are addressing two guys who make their sole living designing and building golf courses.

We're also very keen on what you are keen on......but by living golf 22/6, sometimes boys just wanna have fun.....you know what I mean? ;)

How's "demo them when their time is up" instead? :)
