pebble beach lengthens holes 9-11
« on: May 05, 2008, 01:48:01 PM »
Just received my copy of Inside Pebble Beach over the weekend.  After reading the thread about the new tee on hole 3, on page 2, the Pebble Beach Resorts can also reveal that holes 9 10 and 11 will have brand new teeing grounds 25-30 yards back from their current positions.

I always knew there was 25-30 yards available on holes 9 and 10, but, after using Google Earth, it looks like the back of the 10th green and the 11th teeing ground has been cleared out to have that hole play from 405 rather than the 380 on the card.

Are there any other new tees other than 3 9 10 and 11 that haven't been reported yet?

As it stands, I have the card of the course for 2010 as the following:

380/485/410/330/190/525/110/420/490:  3340 yards, par 35
470/405/205/420/590/400/405/210/545:  3650 yards, par 36
6990 yards par 71, or +145 from 2000.

With the four new tees, that basically maxes out Pebble at just under 7000 from the 71 par tees.

Other news in the article:

1.  They have planted extra ryegrass to counterbalance the effect of the poa and kikuyu on the course;
2.  They are reworking every bunker on the course, new sand in each bunker and new bunkers on 4 and 6 in the fairways to bring the coastline into play;
3.  New cypress trees have been planted on 14 15 and 16, some at 30 feet to replenish what was there previously.

Peter,
Is Inside Pebble Beach a magazine or newsletter?  Can you send me the information to sign up for it.

Thanks for the information on the changes.

More depressing news. Assuming that they can't build the tee at 18 any further out into the sea, do any of us anticipate living long enough to see it played as a stiff par 3...?

Not true, they could put the tee behind either behind the 17th green, or to the left of the green for tournament play only.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

These guys deserve some kind of award. GCA blunder upon blunder award. Maybe blunder squared would be a good name?

Jeff:

In reading Ran's reviews in Courses by Country, I'm struck by his frequent observation that some holes on classic courses have been improved strategically by technology. That is (to cite one example) the ability to hit a driver farther and straighter than, say, 50 years ago, improves a hole by bringing into play more trouble, or creating a broader spectrum of risk/reward.

I've heard this said about Pebble's 18th -- that what used to be a fairly routine three-shot par 5 now, with improved club and ball technology, has emerged as an interesting, risk/reward par 5.

I heard they were making these changes to try and stay ahead of MPCC Shore in the rankings ... ;)
