"the mysterious montague" New
« on: May 01, 2008, 10:42:28 AM »
just read a piece in sports illustrated (5/5/08) regarding a new book about john montague written by leigh montville titled "the mysterious montague". it seems montague was a fixture at lakeside golf club in the 30's and became known as the country's best and most mysterious golfer. he was a celebrity among celebrities, a scratch golfer, trick shot artist and strongman. he once lifted 300 lb. oliver hardy with one hand. supposedely beat bing crosby on the course with a baseball bat, a rake, and a shovel. played with howard hughes, drank with johnny weismuller and was written about by grantland rice yet avoided publicity and photographs(there is a photo with babe ruth in the story), and never entered into a pro tournament. turns out he was an ex-bootlegger wanted for an armed robbery. a high profile trial ensues with defense attorneys hired by bing. sounds like an interesting read.
