Chateau Elan--Woodlands and Chateau Courses
« on: April 21, 2008, 10:34:27 PM »
The Washington & Lee Generals golf team roared to a ten stroke victory over the Guilford Quakers this weekend for our first NCAA Championship berth since 1992.  The tournament will be taking place May 13-16 down in Braselton, GA at Chateau Elan resort.  We will be playing one tournament round at the Woodlands course and three on the Chateau course.

Both courses were designed by Denis Griffiths (Chateau in 1989, Woodlands in 1996).  His website does not appear to acknowledge them as part of his oeuvre, however.

What say you on these courses?  "Typical resort golf" or something more substantial?

Thanks!

Both courses have the potential to have been so much more. They are good solid courses that had more than enough of the right type of terrain to create masterpieces, especially as the money that backed their creation was also there.

Still, they are good competition courses as they will tend to separate the weaker from the stronger player.

I played both courses last Saturday on a golf trip with friends.

I personally enjoyed the Woodlands course more (although my brother disagreed), but both are built on similar property. Lots of elevation changes. I tend to agree with Philip that both courses could have been much better.

The Chateau course has a number of holes that may take the driver out of a strong college player's hand. I don't have an exact count, but a number of holes had a creek running across the landing area, forcing the player to choose a layup or a heroic drive. (For the record, I'm not particularly long off the tee so I could be exaggerating the challenge of driving over the hazard).

The Woodlands course is the tighter of the two and made slightly better use of the land. Nothing extraordinary but a good solid course.

Best of luck in the tournament.

Tim -

Both are good courses. I always thought the design work was less than inspired. But good courses that you will enjoy. If they let the rough grow, I could imagine them being pretty tough.

Good luck in the tournament. Say hello to Joe for me.

I'd echo the above; good golf courses, but nothing that you will remember forever or be wild to come back to.  The Woodlands course is marginally the better of the two, but both are solid.

There is a par five on the Woodlands with a square pond in the middle of what ought to be the landing zone for the second shot.  Kind of weird, as I remember it.  Other than that, pretty standard golf.

Tim, good luck in your upcoming event, I am curious as to how collegiate players would approach a few holes off the tee on the Chateau course.  The Chateau is a decent course that is usually in good condition.  I can't say that I am fond of it at all but there are several good holes on the course.  The 9th, I think is a very strong par 4 around 450 or so with a severe 3 or 4 tier green with the fakest waterfall you ever saw to the right of the green, it is a tough hole.

I like the Woodlands alot better than the Chateau but this may tell you something, I can only think of a few holes on the course.

I don't play too much and I try to play different places around ATL every time that I play so I only get out there once every 2 years or so and it is only about 15 miles from my house.

I don't think that I helped at all, but I wish you the best of luck.  Am I right, your last round in GA was a good one?  Hit em straight.
