Guess the hole...
« on: April 22, 2008, 06:41:30 AM »
I asked a friend to describe, in 25 words or less, a hole he had recently played. I've not played it, but was curious as to its quality. As you'll see, he took some creative licence -

"A treacherous shortish par 4 where commitment to strategy is paramount. You tee off with the ocean at your back, wary of the burn which cuts the fairway at 270yards. Your second is blind up a near vertical rise to a Machiavellian green. Take 4 and run."

One of the more entertaining hole descriptions I can ever remember reading. Alas, I cannot vouch for its accuracy, as I've not played the course. Can you guess the hole?

2nd at Machrihanish immediately came to mind for me too. 3 through 8 tops off a great stretch of seaside holes and some fantastic rolling greens.

I played TOC the day before. Only a few courses anywhere can boast greens which don't seem boring a day after playing the Old Course. Fortunately, Machrihanish is one of those few.

One of the interesting things to me about Machrihanish is that the opening hole, with its cape-like drive over the Atlantic Ocean, gets all the publicity and is viewed as one of the premier par 4s in all of golf.

To me, it's not nearly as good of a hole as No. 2, and pales besides several of the others on the front nine. Yes, the drive is terrific. But the fairway is uncharacteristic of many of those found on the front nine -- flat with level lies, and Machrihanish's front nine is all about uncertain lies and crazy bounces. In addition, 1st green is angled away from the ocean, not toward it (reducing its true cape-like nature), and is pretty tame in terms of contouring. The 2nd green is an all-world green, and much more representative of what the golfer will find throughout the round there.

Matthew,

You have to watch those Machiavellian greens. They are extremely devious. I much prefer Pythagorean or Freudian greens, but I totally steer clear of Gnostic greens.

MM,

I thought it would be a hole at Princes, I'm sure I've seen Machiavelli referred to there
