Best Course on TV this weekend?
« on: April 05, 2008, 02:44:35 AM »
The European Tour at Oitavos Dunes in Estoril, Portugal (Arthur Hills).
Champions Tour at Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic (Jack Nicklaus)
PGA Tour at Redstone in Houston (Rees Jones)
LPGA in Mission Hills, Rancho Mirage (Desmond Muirhead)

I think I put them in my watching order.

I would definitely be most interesting in seeing Cap Cana.  I have heard so much publicity about that I am curious to see if it can live up to the hype.  Cap Cana should be interesting and to be honest, none of the courses interest me.

Cap Cana certainly looks like a winner.  I just hit the record button on my DVR.  Thanks for the reminder.
(of course, watching Ochoa play golf is a real treat too).

Dan,

What golf hole is that in the picture under your name?  From French Creek?  It is our opening day today, so I think the best course to watch this weekend is the one I'll be on  ;)

Have fun Wayne  :).

Redstone is number one on my list because it is local.  The course itself is quite blah though.  I will definitely DVR the seniors to see Cap Cana for the first time (other than their commercial).

Cap Cana is incredible on HDTV. Some green sites are built on oceanside land - it's amazing to see a player putt with with huge rolling waves in the background. The course looks to be built at sea level, this enhances the visuals.

Yeah - it's one part of one of Gil's original drawings.

I agree that Cap Cana gives even more sense of the ocean that places like Pebble. The sea actually feels like a part of the course, and of course it is on many holes. With that 30mph+ wind, many shots are actually hit out over the water while praying the wind stays steady. Fun to watch.

Agreed. I guess that means you aren't paying the $249 to play on Monday?

I'll probably sit that one out.

You also get 2 meal, soda, and a SHO gift. A foursome can get on for $949.

Well, I just played Oitavos, exactly a month ago so I have to go with Oitavos.    A funky course with some very unique characteristics that feels old school with the routing and layout.

I've played Oitavos a few times. I enjoyed it. It looks like there has been no wind, which is a pity.

The island green at Cap Cana is intriguing, especially when you consider the Cink DQ last week for testing the surface.  Does "CC" treat its bunkers as bunkers, or have they wimped out and called them "waste areas"?

The course looks wonderful with some design elements I've not seen much before - like ponds surrouded by a bunker.

I'm not sure, but it can't possibly go to the PGA Tour, because Johnny Miller would ruin your enjoyment of watching a tour event at Cypress. Man is he annyoing.

Dan:
The rule at Cap Cana (if I remember correctly), is that all sand is "through the green" unless it is "surrounded by grass."  So, the island green isn't a bunker.  In fact, most of the sand there isn't considered "bunker."
I've played it twice.  I liked it, but not as much as the Teeth.  I confess to being prejudiced, however.
I also played P.B.'s L'Estancia.  Some very cool holes, and, all in all, a very enjoyable track.
