Highest total par
« on: March 27, 2008, 05:10:06 PM »
Greetings,

I am interested in hearing about golf courses with the highest total par that you know of. I don't know of an 18-hole course that has a par higher than 73. I have done a 9-hole course, par 37, making it a 74 for 18 holes of course. I am sure there are many examples of that. What about 18-hole courses?

I believe I have seen higher par for the forward tees. I am interested in the set of tees that is chosen by most players.

Willie Nelson was said to set par daily at his course. I'm not sure, but I figure he had some wild numbers at least some days.

The hardest one I could find in my travels was theInternational in Bolton Ma at par 73.  Measuring 8325 from the Tiger tees.  Rating 80 Slope 154.  2007 second hardest course in America.

Sevillano Links in north central California has a routine par of 72, but
altenate tees can stretch it to a par 90.

I'd bet he never has trouble telling which way the wind is blowing.

Have played Desmond Muirhead's St.Andrews 2000 in Thailand , which because of two par 6's , is a par 74.

A the Pines course at the International, the 8300 yard tees were par 77 from construction until about 5 years ago, when it was changed to par 73...
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I seem to remember that Wentworth's West course was a par-74 for the members the first time I saw it, in 1982, but they had reduced par to 73 by the time I went back in the mid-90's.  That's the only scorecard I have.

A lot of older American courses are par-75 or even 76 for women because they didn't put in forward tees, and a lot of the par-4's for men are 400-yard par-5's for women.  Some clubs have changed this but some hold out because the women's committee (the club champ and runner-up) like the setup as it is.

I've heard the first hole is a par 18, and Willie said, "I birdied that sucker just the other day!"
