Geoff:

Your question is why I've insisted that the group think about the ancestry of Macdonald's holes as much as any of the holes he actually built.

All of those holes have links precedents, including Short (the 4th at Brancaster) and Alps (the 17th at Prestwick), and they worked just fine in their original setting despite variable winds.  We just have to understand why and manage to apply it.

The hard part about testing shot values in the dirt is that the most important part is the part you don't get to see -- how the ball is going to react when it lands on turf.  Predicting the carry is much simpler.

....and adding to Tom's last point, the fun at Bandon really starts when the ball gets to the ground, and begins to roll.

The turf management focus for the superintendents there continues to be fast and firm.....as each course gets built there, and as our ability to grow fine fescue turf evolves, the ground conditions that Tom mentions become more and more a major part of the equation.

Golf gods willing, and a steady supply of sand, look for that to continue at Old Macdonald.

All the best from clear and cold Bandon.

How did the resort fare with all those severe storms last week?

Tom...........It was a GREAT SHAKEDOWN...24 hours plus of sustained 50-100 mph winds!
Alot of trees down at Bandon Trails and throughout the resort, with some minor damage to buildings, as well as disruption of power to the resort.

A substantial amount of cleanup in progress, ranging from lichen from the trees now attached to every blade of grass, and tree debris and removal in the forested portions of the resort.  That will be ongoing through the week ahead.

No injuries though.......the most important news, and we are feeling fortunate for that.  Minimal disruption for our guests,  good news as well.

For those interested, Bandon is compiling a list of people who  would like to be there for opening day of this course so you  can be notified when reservations are opened up.

Eric,
Just call up Bandon Dunes at 1-888-345-6008 and ask for reservations. Then just give them the GCA password.

Just kidding about the password part. :) Opening day is a lot of fun, I have been to the last two at Bandon. Mike Keiser and the architect are usually there, they take pix of your group with MK that they send to you later, an opening day scorecard, and a opening day medallion thing. All in all I have found them to be an enjoyable experience.

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--
