Big Los Angeles Times Article on Strantz and Tobacco Road
« on: March 10, 2008, 03:54:24 PM »
Apologies if this has already been posted.

In Sunday's Los Angeles Times' Travel section there was a long article on Tobacco Road and Mike Strantz that gets into Stantz' design philosophy and is really something that you would not expect to find in a newspaper.

The article is by Orrin Starn who is a professor of philosophy at Duke.  There is a very good photo gallery and a sidebar where the author picks his modern favorites.

Thanks for this link, David.

I have great respect for Mike Stantz and his golf architecture. It's great to see his work being acknowledged this way, by Orin Starn's wonderful article.

Thank you very much for the link.

Gotta figure out how to PDF such articles for my archives.

Thanks for this thread, David.

From that article, some pics [hopefully not copyrighted]...

I have yet to play any of Mike's designs, but given the photos I've seen (my current desktop background is a pic of Bull's Bay #1) and the articles that I've read on his courses, I look forward to the opportunity.

I liked this article, it looks at golf courses in a far different light that usually seen. Its odd how he can relate things like that to the culture of a particular area. I would like to see something liek that done with other courses nationwide and how they fit into the culture of a given town. I certainly think Pinehurst Country Club fits in as the resort destination the town was/is.
