Photos of Sugarloaf Mountain (C&C course near Orlando)
« on: March 03, 2008, 11:27:13 PM »
I was able to get around C&C's Sugarloaf Mountain in Clermont, FL back in December.   I took a bunch of pics, though
about 6-7 didn't come out, as I had my older camera, which malfunctions too often.

#1, par 4, 433 yards, from atop the hill:

Approach:

#2, par 5, 558 yards:

#3, par 4, 462 yards (draw tee shot preferred):

Approach:

looking up the hole from behind:

#4, par 4,  405 yards, blind tee that tumbles down the hill:

from over the hill:

Approach:

#5, par 3, 200 yards, the green has a vertical spine separating higher right side:

#6, par 4, 377 yards, uphill, dogleg left:

from the left side of the green:

#7, par 4, 435 yards, uphill slight dogleg right:

Approach:

#8, par 3, 165 yards:

#9, par 5, 516 yards:

from green back down hole (I had several other pics of this oh-so-lovely hole, but only 2 survived):

#10, par 4, 458 yards:

Approach:

#11, par 3, 121 yards:

#12, par 5, 575 yards (tee shot is mirror - fade preferred- of #2):

2nd shot lands short or attempt over these crossbunkers:

#13, par 4, 507 yards, blind tee shot, straight down a ski slope (downtown Orlando in distance):

Approach:

A look up the ski slope (keep in mind pics don't do elevation justice):

#14, par 4, 378 yards (Cape):

Approach after successful risk:

#15, par 4, 283 yards, straight up the ski slope, very reminiscent of the short 4 at Colorado GC:

from short left of appropriately small, nasty green:

#16, par 4, 459 yards (approach on dogleg left hole):

from closer up:

#17, par 3, 257 yards, straight down the hill:

from just over the waste bunker, the large (11,000 sq ft), fallaway green:

#18, par 5, 468 yards, straight up the ski slope:

2nd shot:

Michael

This is on the northernmost part of the Florida Ridge, an extended dune structure that forms the spine of the middle part of the Florida Peninsula.

I posted several topos a little over a year ago on it.  (Almost nobody cared and it died a quiet death....)

As orange growers cash out, it presents amazing potential for golf courses: 30-40 foot elevation changes and sand to a depth of 20-30 feet in many places.  John McPhee even wrote a book about it!

(BTW A lot of people think Lake Wales is on The Ridge but I think it actually misses the actual Ridge, at least most of the course does -- Sugarloaf however is right on top of it, as are 1-3 other courses west of Orlando.)

Get down towards Frostproof and The Ridge forms some amazing topography.  You can barely get a truck through some parts of The Ridge, the sand is that deep.

Too bad it's about one million degrees come June.

Looks awesome.  I would have never guessed its Florida if someone hadn't told me.

As for all those white stakes, please tell me those aren't OB stakes???

Kalen,

They were still going through grow-in, so my guess is the stakes were there to help define mowing lines.

Nice pic's.  I have a question for all. It appears there are waste areas along with formal bunkers with deep verticle cut edges.  Then there are bunkers that are a naturalized hybred of the 2.  Is this too much variety or does it add to the complexity?  Also, as with some recent pic's from New Zealand, it seems that chunked edges and even little outcroppings of turf within the bunkers are gaining as the new fad.  Does anyone have a problem when it comes to the rules?  Do you consider them bunkers or just through the green?  What if your ball rolls up against an outcropping or settles down in the sand between a couple of chunks along the edge - can you take a drop?
Coasting is a downhill process

They used the white stakes to locate the valve boxes so they could be entered into a GPS.

Has John Conely ever said a word about this course.  Where is the Oracle of Orlando when he could do some good?

Looks nice. Some similarities to Pine Barrens but a heck of a lot closer to Orlando. Has this been rated yet for course and slope? Looks fairly wide and not terribly troublesome off the tee.

I have to go to O-town next year and will make a point to play this.
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?
