Thanks for the heads up.

Leigh Montville used to be (and maybe still is) a  sports writer for the Boston Globe. He is very good. Between Pete Gammons and Montville, opening The Globe sports pages every morning back in the '70's was a mini-literary event.

BTW and speaking of hustlers, has anyone ever written a book on Titanic Thompson?

BCrosby,
Unsinkable Titanic Thompson by Carlton Stowers
Funeral of Titanic Thompson by Lowell Douglas.
The latter, set as a wake, gets good reviews.

A 1937 Time Magazine story about John Montague

http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,882762,00.html

John Montague used to frequent the Studio City golf course in the late 60's early 70's.
He was a kind and gentle man at that time, especially to squirts like me.

I think the last few years of his life were not particularly happy.
I went to his funeral service in 71/72.  Three or four people showed up.

Joe, That was a wonderful find from Time magazine-circa 1937.

Bob-Leigh Montville left the Boston Globe many years ago, he wrote for SI, now he is on his own. The Babe Ruth and Ted Williams books are fantastic-he also did one on Dale Earnhardt.
