Fawning on GCA
« on: February 28, 2008, 02:50:42 PM »
I noticed a strange new card set beside the hockey cards today - so I bought a pack for $4.95. The gum was stale but I got the first two of my new set. I can't wait to find a checklist to see who's available.

I'll trade either of these two for a Richardson!

This might be a rookie card!

Robert,

I don't have a picture of him - or I would have done a card

Ian, that's brilliant.  Where's your card?  What's on the BACK?  Come on we need stats and anecdotes for the reverse side.

Ian,

That's a hoot.  I agree we need those for ASGCA, too.  These would be much better than those damn Ross bobblehead dolls!  I guess instead of yearly stats on the back, we would just have our list of courses, either by year or slope rating.

Good to see you maintain your sense of humor whilst the Leafs are in the middle of another Titanicriffic season..........

I suppose you made these up the other day while surfing the net to see how all the hockey trades went down?

Again, thanks for the chuckle.

I got a Ross bobblehead doll for my birthday and when my 12 year old son saw he exclaimed..."I didn't know Hitler played golf!"

Ian,

Brilliant! A definite candidate for "Post of the Year"... nice work!

The #1 card must be Ran Morrissett... or Ben Dewar  ::)

Did you happen to get a Whitman card in your pack?!

Jeff B.,

Brad Richards was a nice acquisition for the Stars. Your squad's looking good heading toward the playoffs... which bugs me!

Along with stats on the back, there should be a definitive statement of the architect's work by the only man whose played them all, the Golf Czar Matt Ward.

 :)

It's always fun for me to see photos of the architects who post - almost none of them look like what I pictured in my head. Of course, the same could be said of all the other posters as well.

Jeff M,

The Stars do seem to be on the rise, but I am skeptical that they are peaking too early.  In many years, the Stars have played great in Feb-March only to run out of gas in the playoffs.  In some ways, Detroit is better off slumping now, assuming they get it back together.

The Stars may have chemistry problems adding Richards in.  Hull brought him in to have a quality player next to Modano, but the coach has demoted Mo to third string checking center, despite what I think are still considerable talents if paired correctly.  Yes, he has lost a step, but he had two to give.

Time, as always will tell.  Good news about that trade is that I haven't picked up any of the new style Stars jerseys yet, and I think tonight I can get Smith, Halpern or Jussi Jokinen jerseys on the cheap!

For some real insider info on ASGCA, I can tell you that Ian (I presume, even back when Doug Carrick presented it) has often done some photoshop gag shots of various members for a moment of hilarity at our typically serious meetings.  He is a real cut up, that Ian.

Forrest Richardson also leads "blitz" sessions, whereby members offer up personalized material including songs, jokes, skits and sometimes serious stuff but still just for fun.

They are all stealing some of Carnac's thunder at meetings! :D

Ian, you must be well and truly snowed in!

This is all very amusing but... I'm assuming I'm not the only one who has seen collectible cigarette cards given away in the first half of the C20th on eBay.
I must say some of them are quite charming.

Brian,

I took the afternoon off from working today because I felt like doing nothing. It's too cold to skateboard......

Lloyd,

Those are really interesting thanks for the heads up. I have always looked out for postcards - there are lots of good examples availble from famous courses.
