Is This Correct: The Institue

Cut from Geoff Shackelford's blog....

Which was cut from a PGA Tour press release...

Following two additional years (2008 and 2009) at Grayhawk Golf Club’s Raptor Course, The Fry’s Electronics Open will move in 2010 to the Fry’s Electronics-owned course called The Institute, located near San Jose, California. Upon its move to The Institute, the event will be renamed The Institute Championship and will become an invitational event with a 120 player field.

I am extremely surprised by this ... I guess they (the Fry's) settled their differences with the city of Morgan Hill ...

Here is an article from today's San Jose Mercury ...

The Institute Lands a PGA Event

As with much of the history of Fry's golf course, the announcement caught city officials off guard.

"Wow" was the initial response of City Manager Ed Tewes, who said he had received no word from golf course representatives that the tournament was planned. The course had been designed to host tournament play, but Fry representatives have said repeatedly that any decision on actually bringing a tournament was years away, Tewes said.

Under its current permits - approved after years of disputes with environmentalists and federal, state and local agencies - the golf course can host no more than 36 players a day. The limits were designed in part to protect sensitive wildlife habitats, including that of the endangered Califorinia red-legged frog, which inhabits a creek that cuts through the course.

"There would have to be changes to the existing approvals, and we'd have to review the environmental effects," Tewes said. "If such effects could be mitigated, it would be a great thing for Morgan Hill.

This was Fry's goal from the get go. They apparently went about it correctly, as far as the PGA is concerned. Chaos theory should have the ball rolled back prior to the event making it's length superfluous.

I would be very surprised if the neighbors don't block this with legal actions. From what I have read one of the big blocks has been no access roads and traffic to and from the course on streets not designed for that. Even if they use busses I think the locals will fight it. Maybe with the PGA commitment and mucho local charity commitments it can be worked out. For the money they have lost to date by not opening the course, they could have bought condo's for the frogs in the valley.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Tim,

I'm not sure the course was ever intended to be "open".  Its my understanding it was built to be a private course with few if any memberships so I'm not sure what money has been lost per se.  The whole thing has been an exercise in renegade capitilism at its best (worst) where a very rich guy has basically said to hell with everyone, I'm building this thing, approvals or not!!

It is incorrect to assume that traffic would be a deal-killer for an event at The Institute.  There is actually great freeway access from both north and southbound Hwy. 101 with no less than at least two separate exits from the highway.  Once onto surface streets, you are only a couple of miles from the course with all the roads surrounded by either ag fields or multi-acre ranchettes.

Having just seen in person what is needed to access Riviera during the annual tournament there, it being located hard within an upscale neighborhood, this is an absolute slam dunk for access.  And said fields could possibly find use as parking, but I don't know about that.

And finally, while not the timeline rocket of Chambers Bay in its acquisition of the Open, for northern California, this was quick: design start - 1995, general completion - 2000, PGA event - 2010.
