The new issue of the Bay Area Golf Guide lists Robert Wood Johnstone as the architect of Presidio Golf Course. I really don't think I've heard this name before.

Who is he? What did he do?

I wouldn't be surprised if he was a military officer, given the course's history (think Bayonet/Black Horse). You might try apporaching your search from that angle.

Matt -

In all my years playing at the Presidio, I never heard that name mentioned. I believe Robert Muir Graves did some work on the course around 1970, but Robert Wood Johnstone rings no bells that I can hear.

I wonder where the Bay Area Golf Guide came up with that name? Why don't you give them a call and ask?

The original golf course at the Presidio was organized by a civilian group, not by the Army.

Matt,

Take a look at these, for whatever they are worth:

http://www.ausgolf.com.au/presidio-golf-course
http://sf.ruggedelegance.com/places/807.html
http://www.ncga.org/courses/presidio.php

I found link after link attributing the course to him, but nothing more concrete in terms of an article about the making of or his background.

Edit:  Supposedly he also did these as well:

Inglewood Country Club - Private in Kenmore
Quail Creek Golf Course - Public in North Liberty
Rainier Golf & Country Club - Private in Seattle
Seattle Golf Club - Private in Seattle

Thanks for the links. The ausgolf.com article on the Presidio is extremely detailed and informative.

You guys are making me come out of the woods on this one!

Robert johnstone was the pro and Presidio for a number of years in the early 1900's, he was not even around when the course was built and would later move up to Seattle and work at SCC I think. I am a little rusty on this, but I can say with certainty that he did not design the original course at Presidio.

I have a name popping up in my head, but i need to verify it first.
