The 12th at Pebble Beach
« on: August 01, 2002, 05:37:37 PM »
i love this par-3. it's a great one-shot hole that demands an absolute perfect shot. however, why do people say that this hole doesn't match up with the rest of the course? it is a beautiful golf hole, and one that demands alot. why? what bad stuff do you have to say about it? i love it!

You'll be in slim company here.  Bow-wow, woof woof.

It only works when it is sopping wet.

It is a good hole and fits the course. I think it needs a little more depth on the right with a slightly larger opening on the right side. Of course the hole was much tougher before. It just seems that there should be a way to be on the green with a wood or long iron. It is a tough green to hold even with a well hit shot from the tips.

How dare you call me slim!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with 12. It is one of the most demanding, decpetive shots out there. The best thing about 12 is that if you do miss it perfectly, you have a chance to make an ace. What I'm Talking about is the front rightside bunker has a ridge that if struck properly, (which happens to be a short right miss), the ball bounds hard left and forward onto the green. The wind is the biggest factor which makes it deceptive but the huge front bunkers backside, is sloped to the back which springs a ball that just carries, off the back. Par is a very good score here.

Played there about 3 months ago in tons of wind and remember this hole being one of the more intimidating tee shots.

The best way to play 12 is from the front bunker. Unless you can either a) Hit a 7 iron sky-high like Tiger did or b)Control a longer iron and run it up the narrow entrance on the right. The hole fits the course, its just one demanding tee shot - besides, isn't Bing's old house right there on the right?

How much of the issue is that it LOOKS ordinary??

I've never hit a good shot there so I can't speak to the "holdability" of the green.

I'll bet the same green with MacKenzie bunkering would get rave reviews just on appearrance, alone.

Chip,
Mackenzie bunkers would not change my view.  I think that the green is the least receptive and the punishment too severe.  We are talking about a hole that is 202 yards long, not 107.  There is not easy way to play this hole if conditions are firm and the shot into the opening is not designed properly to accept running shots.  The front bunkers are indeed the play, if you have been behind the green once, you will not make that mistake twice.

Is there any chance that this hole has changed substantially since that late 20s?

If you look at Geoff's Golden Age book, the difference between the 17th in early photos versus now is night & day - I wonder if the same thing happened here.

Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

Visually inspiring? No. A sense of achievement walking off the green with a par, spot on.

By the way, Bing's house, now demolished, was on the 13th fairway, not to the right of the green.
