The Architects
« on: December 13, 2007, 11:42:08 PM »
I just wanted to share some of my favorite photo's of some of my favorite architects from the GA. Sometimes in our discussions we lose sight of the fact that there were humans behind those designs and it's good to have a face to go with the courses. Most of you have probably have seen most of these if not all of them. Please share some of yours if you have some. (That means you Wayne, Philip, and Tommy! I've included some of you 3's favs. :))

H.S. Colt

David great stuff thanks.  Behr looks so modern next to AM.

This is possibly the last ever photo of Colt, in the overcoat front row.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Perhaps Ran can start a little fund for our Alive Guy resident architects and buy them a few ties for future pictures in the field.  :D

That second photo of a young Tillinghast looks just like Marion Hollins.  She was pretty scary looking, for a woman.  No wonder she could clear the expanse before the 16th at Cypress Point.  That's not a woman; its a man, man :o

David,

The photo of the fourth figure in the Hugh Wilson, William Flynn and Joe Valentine photo is not Howard Toomey.  The attribution has always been wrong though repeated numerous times.  We have never seen a photo of Howard Toomey.  The gentleman in the photograph is Winthrop Sargent, who served for a time as chairman of the Green Committee at Merion, and was so during the changes made prior to the 1916 Amateur.

Thanks Wayne. My mistake. As far as Hollins, very funny! ;D I picturing that being said in the best Austin Powers voice! ;)

I was going to mention the guy on the left in the Toomey, Valentine, Flynn, Wilson photo was not Toomey but I see Wayne already did.

I too love that photo for a number of interesting reasons. One is that in reading through so many of Hugh Wilson's letters it's pretty clear the guy had a very clever sort off-beat sense of humor that reminded me in text of the way JFK spoke---eg sometimes self-deprecating.

The other reason is if that's not enough similarity to JFK, I think Wilson looks remarkably like a young JFK in that particular photo.

I don't know how many of you guys are aware of this but JFK was not a bad golfer and he had a very good looking swing!  ;)

Bob Crosby found a photo of young Mackenzie the other day in one of the heretofore missing "The Field" magazines from London that I doubt anyone has seen in years.

"Tom,  I bet your crack drive couldn't get past that manly Marion Hollins's average effort    ;D"

Wayno:

Even when I played pretty good I did run into some women golfers here and there who could sure get it by me. Marion most definitely would've been one of them, and probably even on her 80% safety attempts.

But don't you go snickering at my shortness. Don't forget, I saw that little slip of an LPGA player at Merion playing from the same tees as you get it by your tee shots a number of times.  ;)

But then again, during a USGA Publinks qualifier I saw a 14 year old Michelle Wie get it by a number of guys who probably thought they good get it out there pretty far!

Why is Tillinghast wearing a dress?    :o

Mike,

You asked, "Why is Tillinghast wearing a dress?"

The year the photo was taken is 1877. It was the norm for both boys and girls 3-4 years of age and younger to wear dresses.

Not to be overly tacky, but conveniences such as washers, dryers and pampers were still a number of years in the future. Keeping little ones derrier's clean was a challengeand their clothing even more so back then.  ;D
