Hugh Alison's Other Work Abroad
« on: November 28, 2007, 08:59:13 AM »
According to Fred Hawtree, in addition to Kawana Fuji, Tokyo, and Hirona, Hugh Alison did extensive remodelling at Nauro, Shizuoaka, Kasumigaseki East & West, and Kawana Oshima.

He also remodelled Royal Selangor in Malaysia, Vereeniging in S. Africa,  Huntingdale in Australia, and an unnamed course in Auckland, NZ.

Does anyone have additional info, pictures, so on, that he could share?

In the IMO there's an excellent piece on his work in Japan by Tom MacWood.

Tony, Noel,

I've read those excellent pieces before... thanks.  I mean in addition to what is already on the site.

(And Sr.Tuco, no, the search function doesn't work regardless.  ;))

Frank, thanks, I'm familiar with the work he and Colt did on the Continent.  Someday I hope to do the ex-US tour. ;)

I am trying to find more information on courses other than Kiwana Fuji, Tokyo, and Hirona but still located in the Far East, Australia/NZ, and S. Africa -- the ones mentioned in my question.

I believe Alison's name was also mentioned on a couple of other courses in South Africa, but I'd have to go back and check my notes.

He did do the routing for Huntingdale in Australia but apparently from a topo without ever setting foot in the country.  It's since been drastically remodeled, but it wasn't that special "before".

He is credited with adding the deep bunkers at Kasumigaseki (East).  The West course there has also been largely remodeled since.  Naruo is very good but I don't remember what he is supposed to have done there.

Thanks Tom.  If you have the time and the notes, I'd appreciate info on the S. African courses.

Hawtree indicates that the work he did on the other course, save Huntingdale, was "extensive remodeling" that would qualify as full redesigns.   Not much is known about the Auckland course.
