I have no clue where they came from, but I've heard them referred to as "Pro Walks" many times.

There is an old story that someone (possibly reporters) asked then USGA executive diretor Joe Dey why there were no mown walking paths between the tees and fairways. His response was that wet cuffs and socks lety the players know they were in the US Open.

Could be just an old story.
