Best "team" for each state
« on: November 22, 2007, 04:39:20 PM »
With it being Thanksgiving and football it got me thinking if you compiled the best "team" from each state who would win (as far as golf courses are concerned).

QB-Crystal Downs
RB-Oakland Hills
FB-Franklin Hills
WR-Arcadia Bluffs
WR-Lost Dunes
TE-Greywalls
LT-Dunes Club
RT-Forest Dunes
C-Kingsley Club
LG-Tullymore
RG-Eagle Eye
K-Bay Harbor
P-Indianwood (Old)
KR-Lakewood Shores (Gailes)
PR-Wuskowhan Players Club

Find me another state with a better "team"

I think North Carolina could be in the mix...

QB --Pinehurst #2
RB --Wade Hampton
RB--Grandfather Golf and Country Club
WR--Tobacco Road
WR --Diamond Creek
TE--CCNC
LT--Old Linville Golf Course
RT--Tigers Eye
LG--Eagle Point
RG--Old North St
C --Old Chatham
P-- Pinehurst #4
K--Quail Hollow
KR--Charlotte CC
PR--Club at Longview

lots and lots of subs...The truth is, my list for NC probably doesn't even fully do it justice....Pretty good for a small state...

Sorry Bill, while the NJ team is very good, the Cal team comes out oton top for me. :)

Maybe, haven't played enough of the CA courses to counter.

But change it to an All Metro NYC team, and we get to include Winged Foot, Westchester, Quaker Ridge, National, Shinnecock, Stanwich, CC of Fairfield, Hudson National, Garden City, etc, then everyone else is playing for second.

The PA team is very strong , too!

How does Old Town not make the grade for North Carolina?  I vote Old Town as a wide receiver.  So wide that nobody in the bloody state received the email saying how good it is!

Ohio would be competitive:

QB - Inverness
RB - Muirfield Village
FB - Scioto
WR - Camargo
WR - The Golf Club
TE - OSU Scarlet
LT - Double Eagle
LG - Brookside (Canton)
C - Firestone
RG - NCR
RT - Canterbury
P - Sand Ridge
K - Columbus CC
KR - Pinnacle
PR - Tartan Fields

There are some pretty solid bench warmers as well!

I live in NC and have played every course on your list. I regret to say that NC is not in the same league with NY, NJ, Ohio, PA, MA or CA.  Even SC is probably better. Besides, you list fails to include several of the better courses in NC, Pine Needles, Mid Pines, both Forest Creek courses, Brights Creek and Hasentree come to mind.)

Bill Brightly, can't you add Bethpage Black, Winged Foot East, Quaker Ridge, Piping Rock, Engineers and Sebonack to your NY team?

I'd say California plays NY in the Super Bowl.

Brian L,

Don't you have to include The Country Club in Pepper Pike on your list?  That is a fantastic golf course and club.  Geez, if that can't break into the starting lineup, that's something to consider.

I don't think any state can touch NY for overall depth.  Some of that is due to the large geographical area but there are a lot of great and solid courses in that state.  Friar's Head and Creek Club weren't even mentioned yet (I don't think).  However, many of the solid courses tend to be overrated in my opinion.  An objective course by course analysis would find a lot of the Philadelphia/Pennsylvania area courses surprising finishers against the better known NYC/NY contingent, even though they have my number one course in the world in their fold.

Scotland

Goalie--Cruden Bay (all goalies are--at the minimum--slightly nuts)
Central Defenders--Carnoustie and Royal Troon (try to juke your way past those two tough old bastards)
Left Back--The Old Course (dependable and still sprightly after all these years)
Right Back--Muirfield (impeccably able to counter anything coming down the opponent's left wing)
Defending/Holding Mid-Fielders--Prestwick and Turnberry (one grizzled Keano type veteran and one highly talented young punk)
Attacking Midfielders--Royal Dornoch and Kingsbarns (both able to go end to end, with sublimate skill)
Strikers--Loch Lomond and North Berwick (one phenom that's great in the air, one middle-aged veteran poacher with a nose for the goal)

Manager--Gleneagles (a once good but not great player who exudes self-confidence, vision and respect)

I live in NC as well. Sorry, but Jim Lewis is right. We don't match up. A number of the courses on Bart Bradley's list wouldn't make the all-girl's team in New York, PA, CA, or NJ. Old Chatham isn't even an interesting course by Rees Jones standards. But you have to include Old Town in one of the skill positions, I think as the small but quick running back and kick returner.

Scotland actually did kick France's butt and would have kicked Italy's butt too (or at least drawn) if UEFA hand't chosen Manuel the Waiter to referee last week's game at Hampden... :'(

Wayne-

I have not played, nor do I know many that have played The Country Club...so I didn't want to throw it on there from a rankings list.  I'm sure I missed a few others that belong on the list as well.
