Has there ever been a designer that has named a hole after themselves? This has happened at Sandhurst, south of Melbourne, with their Champions Course. Each hole is named after a past Australian PGA champion.

Course is designed by Thomson and Perrett, and yes, hole 12 is named Peter Thomson.

From the Orinda course tour above, this note about the 12th there:

Quote
Following another tradition from Scotland, the twelfth hole was named to honor the course architect, Willie Watson.

one that immediately comes to mind is the 14th at loch lomond - "tom and jay's chance"...

...for me, golf courses without named holes are missing a crucial personal element... i cannot recall playing any course growing up in scotland without each hole individually named...

The par-3 sixth hole at Royal Portrush is named "Harry Colt".  However, that's the only old-time course I can think of which named a hole after the architect.

On second thought there is one more, sort of ... a couple of Raynor courses have a hole named "Raynor's Prize Dog-leg".  The funny tidbit is that this hole isn't really Raynor's design; it was a modification of a runner-up in the Country Life competition from 1914, which Raynor particularly liked.

Some of the interesting hole names at Ridgewood:

Tipperary
Gabriel's Horn
Stockton's Lair
Gypsy's Curse
Scoonie
Possum
Inspiration

Tipperary is a county in Ireland, I believe?

Newport CC has 'em.  So does Fenwick, I believe, and Hotchkiss.

I like it when the holes are named, so long as it's not tacky.  The best, however, is the named bunkers at TOC, e.g. Hell, Shell, Beardies, Kitchen Grave, Stroke...

It seems like most of Fazio's courses have named holes.

Braid's Brawest at Gleneagles (13th on Kings)

"Old Tom" is somewhere but I can't recall the course.

Stanley Thompson seemed to name most holes but courses generally ignore the names until they write a club history.

The certainly add a great deal of charm to the course and well named hole like Het Girdle (hot skillet), Postage Stamp or South America - adds an additional element of fun to the game.
