Do something with the background by adding a splash of heath. That yellow post is a bad thing to look at from the tee.

 Looks like a micro Dell with a herniated green.  We could take the pine tree out as it's trunk is in the most suspenseful ball-reaction area but the high branches beg us to keep it low for a runup.  

I like the heath idea (Calluna would be my choice)  if kept high on hill away from turf.  Cart path too close.

This hole would kill me with my draw, I think I would hit a low punch fade which sometimes works for me and sometimes doesn't.

I played the course twice, liked it the first time and didn't the 2nd time years later.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

The mounding is similar to what we saw when Nicklaus was going through a stage in his design career-very artificial - not something  similar to Ross's cho. drops.

The idiot in me would like to see the back left of the green extended back to potentially make the back mound and even greater obstacle.

I've played the Pit at least 10 times over the years. It does do anything for me. I can hardly remember most of the holes, and certainly not with any detail. The hole in the pictures is pretty tough because you are hitting 3 wood from the back and the chute through the trees appears to be about 10 feet wide. It might be even tighter than the pictures show. Whatever good holes there are, there are too many really bad ones. If you think those trees are bad you should the par 5 that literally has a tree directly in front of the green. I'm not talking like 16 at Sawgrass where you can lay up short and wedge over. I'm talking like the trunk is 20 feet or so in directly in front of the green. Stupid!!!! It's not anywhere in the same league as Tobacco Road.

My wife and I played the Pit this summer and I thought it was a a little like going to a "dive" bar.  The beer tastes the same, but you feel dirty after you leave.  Maybe it was the hazardous waste "pit" along the next hole...

I remember playing this one for the first time and thinking holy crap where is the green.  It looks a lot harder from the tee.

Glad to be back agreeing with Sean, at least occasionally (he has my clubs as hostage).. but he's right here - Timber!
I suspect the architect may have thought - ah, but there's more room around the green than there seems to be from the tee. But when it's trees blocking the view, the only way to hit even the edges of this green is to work the ball..
The hole asks for one shot, a dead straight shot. Penalty for a miss - who knows when you hit a tree?
We have a couple of drives like this at my course, I hate them, and I'm pretty straight. I don't mind being punished, but ball hits tree and outcome unknown = frustration and slow golf.
