Charlotte Golf Links

Would there be interest in a 2-3 day outing in the Charlotte area sometime this spring?  Tom D. asked me a couple of years ago to consider putting something together based around playing Renaissance Golf's CGL.  I'm finally getting around to it.  We'd arrange this around Tom's schedule and him joining us for at least a day.  Probably looking at no more than 16-24 guys/gals.  Looking at two rounds at CGL and one at a TBD course in the area.

I live just down the road in Columbia, SC and would certainly welcome an opportunity to join you guys. The only reason I'd not be able would be if it happens late enough in the spring to run up against my trip to Scotland the first week of June. But any time in March, April or the first week or two in May and I'm there for sure.

I would certainly be interested...only 3 hours away in NE TN/NW NC.  Having shoulder surgery in 3 weeks...so a bit would depend on exactly when and how my recovery is going.

You can put me down as a definitely interested.

I would love to come down to Charlotte.

But we could also go play Riverfront up here in Norfolk/Suffolk/Virginia Beach.

Where else would we play?

Scott, here in Virginia Beach. Ryan Simper is supposedly in Durham now.

Sounds good, lets see how big this thing gets and also how our guest policy changes (if at all) since Musgrove Mill got sold to McConnell Golf this month.  Provided I can make it work we might be able to consider Musgrove as another course (about 1.5hr from CGL) that we might be able to make happen.

ps Bryan welcome to another SC guy on here.

I live 2 miles from CGL and would love to play.  I'm a member of nearby Providence CC (Doak 4) and would be more than happy to arrange some tee times.

High quality courses in the CLT area include Quail Hollow (Wachovia Championship), CLT CC (Ross and others) and Myers Park CC (Ross, Weed, others).  Access to Quail could be difficult, and both CLT and MP are currently undergoing renovations, don't know when they're re-opening.

A new public course called Carolina Lakes opened last fall, and I think it's great -- rolling fairways, undulating greens, good conditions.  Cart- ball through a Del Webb retirement community, but at ~$55 I really enjoy it.

I'd be happy to help with this.  If you wait until after April 1, I could arrange some access to Charlotte CC.  Members can only host 3 guests though. It is reopening in mid-Dec after what looks to be a fantastic renovation by Ron Prichard.  It was a Doak 7 way back when.  We could also go see Carolina Golf Club's midway renovation being led by Kris Spence.  Carolina is a late '20's Ross that is being reworked after years of neglect.  Both Michael Fay and Brad Klein are aware of the work.  Brad Klein did a fine consulting paper on the redo plans.  From an architecture perspective, Myers Park (a combo ross/tillinghast) would be more interesting to look at than Quail Hollow Club, although Quail is a real nice golf course and club.

I can also help with Charlotte CC, if the trip is later in the Spring.  I played Charlotte Golf Links a few weeks ago and I think that is a very interesting course for this group to see and discuss.  TD is fairly humble about it and gives it a 4, but it has some very interesting holes and has a look and feel unlike anything else in the area.  Few people around here even know he designed it, but once you play it, you can certainly tell that it was done by a real architect (if you are paying attention).

I'm up at Old Town C. in W-S and could drop by.

(Also of interest, Spence is "restoring" Charlotte G.C. right now, and Prichard has just finished Charlotte C.C.)

I suppose there's a slim chance I could attend.  Try to ride over with any of Simper, Gracely, Park, Scaletta, Madison, etc., perhaps.

Interesting timing ... I was in the Charlotte airport this evening, but only for about an hour after dark, on my way home from looking at a site in the Caribbean.

I have not played the course since a month before it opened.  I'd be curious to see it again, although I've been told they've changed a few small things.  Finding time will be difficult, we are getting VERY busy all of a sudden.

The RGD course in the Tidewater area - Riverfront - is an alternate consideration.

I would like to do this in mid-April if possible.  If things work out I would like to get the most favorite son of golf - Jessie Owens Morrissett - to participate and perform a live interview of Tom D.

No need to get excited as Tom expressed interest but has committed to nothing yet and I have yet to speak to Ran at all!

Thanks for your responses, emails and IMs but right now let me just generate an "interested" list.

Thanks,
jaycee
