Brooklyn Daily Eagle
« on: November 08, 2007, 04:46:16 PM »
For those interested in digging for some golf history, the Brooklyn Public Libarary has made available digitized copies of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle from 1841 to 1902. I've already uncovered some fascinating information about Seth Raynor and Walter Travis.

Enjoy.

Would be curious what you could uncover about Seth Raynor from a collection that ends in 1902.

JM,

Search out Walter Travis. I think you'll find the bigamy articles quite interesting! I notified Travis biographer Bob Labbance about the find but he has yet to respond.

Indeed.

(Nothing compared to Bendelow though.)

Is Bendelow the league leader? I did not know that. Makes you wonder what he was really doing on Sunday afternoons.

.. and what brought you to peruse the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in the first place? perusing the classifieds? cruising thru the obits to check on a chance inheritence from the Coney Island Pioppis?
one can only wonder....

My motivations are really none of your concern.

For your information I was looking through the Help Wanted ads.

Tony:
I'm confused, is Labbance writing a biography on Walter H. Travis? I can see the adverts now:

"From the author who brought you 'The Old Man,' the definitive biography of Walter J. Travis, comes his latest effort 'The Sleazy Man'" the story of famous Brooklyn bigamist Walter H. Travis and the latest installment in Bob Labbance's critically acclaimed 'Walter Travis' series."  ;D ;D

Seriously, what are you finding about Raynor?

Very interesting resource. I looked up the bigamy article and it was about Walter H. Travis. The Old Man was Walter J. Travis (John) and his friends and wife called him Jack. Clearly a different person and this may well be the reason why The Old Man's initial was commonly used - to differentiate him from the bigamist! Best advise Bob of this so he doesnt have a heart attack over it!
Lots of good stuff in there for the Travisophile.

Neil -
I was trying to point that out to Tony but it went right over his head.

Yes, I can see that now - I have to say it went over my head too the first time I read your post, it was perhaps a little too obtuse for me and I didn't make the distinction between H and J. Least we have both come to the same conclusion.
cheers Neil

Tony,

This has been available for a while now and is a wonderful place to browse and learn about the game's growth and history.

I wish they would release more from this scanning project.
