Tom Winton ?
« on: November 05, 2007, 01:10:56 PM »
Tom  Winton was a Scottish born greenskeeper who was one  of Siwanoys (NY) first keepers of the green. Later on, he pursued some course design. Mike Sweeney  recently mentioned Winton to me, but I know little of his work. Has anyone played one of his courses ? Did Wiinton study  under  Willlie Park jr,  or did he do some work at Apawamis ?

thanks

Mark -

Winton did build courses for Park Jr.   Most of his architecture can be found in the NY State Park system.  From what I have seen, and it is not much, his most noted course may be Corning. C.C. where the LPGA Corning Classic is played.  You can see bits of Park in the bunkers and greens.  The course is quite good with interesting greens and great greenside bunkers.  It is worth a trip to study and on the way you can visit Ross', Mark Twain in Elmira.

In 1934, engineer John Todd was asked to look into Tom Winton as a possible golf architect for the new golf course at the Rockefeller estate in Tarrytown, NY. (the commission was awarded to Wm Flynn).  Winton listed his courses as:

Siwanoy (reconstruction of 9 holes)
Woods Hole CC (9 holes)
Westport Inn GC
Lawrence Farms CC
Allview CC
Congressional CC (reconstruction)
Big Springs CC
Toms River CC
Corning CC
Mill River CC
Fall River CC
Lynnhaven CC
Gedney Farm CC (reconstruction 7 holes)
Amityville CC
Colgate University
Private course for Donald Woodward
Courses for Westchester County Parkway Commission:
Mohansic Park GC
Maplemoor GC
Saxon Woods GC
Sprain Lake GC

He had several letters of recommendation including one by Harry Vardon.

After spending the better part of a year at Sleepy Hollow CC it seems Tom Winton’s work, that was sandwiched between the work of Macdonald and Tillie, may have some of the more interesting work done on the course.

I’d like to know where some of his ORIGINAL (basically untouched) work is.  Not sure we have a Winton expert among us.
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.
