North Berwick's Redan
« on: October 25, 2007, 01:01:02 PM »
Does anyone have a picture of the hole with wood facing on the bunker?

I'm 99% sure I've seen a picture of it but I can't find it. Thanks for your help!

Wayne,

After David Huish insisted that the bunker - as it exists today - is absolutely original, I sent the above photo to the new club secretary (the Redhead and I had a drink or two with him) for review by their member committee.

He thanked me profusely - though it seemed impossible that the club itself did not have many many photos in their archive room.

Has anyone been there recently? The Club Secretary had just arrived from England and told me he thought restoring the Redan Bunker was a fantastic idea.

Thanks Wayne! That's the picture I was looking for!

Now could you get me one in color with a little less fuzziness?

BillB:

There wasn't any color photos back in that day because there wasn't any color. The whole world back then was pretty much just variations of black and white. They didn't even have to worry about their courses browning out either. The worse that could ever happen was just a paler shade of gray.

John Krystynak and I played there twice in late March/early April this year, along with James Bennett and David Mulle one round.  I can assure you the Redan bunker looks nothing like that today!  But the existing bunker is nothing you'd want to be in - ask me how I know!  :o

Look at how small that man is hanging on the top of that bunker. If he was of normal size that hole must have been really big and big in scale. So big, in fact, I would venture to say it may've even been something like 266 yards long!

The present bunker is not even a shadow of the original.  Tom D and I spent the better part of an hour there this past spring and I took a lot of pictures from various angles.

I’ll be home in a couple of days and will post photos of the present bunker.

It’s not much more that a thin strip right now although it’s still very deep.
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

These two have previously been posted on GCA by someone.  I know the modern guy (Bill) is tall, not sure how tall the guy is in the older photo.

Noticed today that North Berwick will be a qualifying course along with Muirfield for the 2010 Amatuer .

I would LOVE to see the sleepers (railroad ties to you uppity furrin types!) brought back to the Redan bunker.

That pic of my Uncle Bill doesn't really convey the scale of the depth of the chasm. It is Deeeeeep! But I can't help feeling the Hole would be even more 'awesome' with a massive vertical timber face in front of you rather than green grass.

I'd bet Doctor V would have something to say. Whatever happened to him anyway....?! ;)

FBD.

PS None of the above dilutes my deep, undying affection for NB in any way. It is a VERY special golf course with the added appeal of having one of the friendliest clubhouses you will ever encounter. Sublime.

OK,that does it! I'm digging the bunker deeper on our Redan tonight, then putting the sand back in before tomorrow's play.

Thanks for the pics, Jim.

Why did they take out the railroad ties, and change the shape of the bunker?

Yea, the wall looks cool until you get hit by a rebound.  Sorry, this is a case where the modern bunker makes more sense.

Over the last year Yeamans Hall has rebuilt their bunker and have made it much steeper, almost looks like the old picture without the railroad ties. The bermuda grass has grown in well and it is Very difficult to get the ball up quick enough to fly the lip. It definitely has added alot more bite to their 6th hole.

Cheers

I wish I could locate that picture of Tony Muldoon playing the third hole at North Berwick, playing an 8-iron from near the wall.  It is a great pic, but it probably illustrates a terrible OH&S issue.  I am glad Tony had the ability to actually hit it over the wall, and not into it.

Damn search feature.

Is this the picture?

I removed it a few days after posting it as I didn't think it was a flattering photograph of Tony!  I'll probably do the same again.

Given how obsessed government bodies are in the UK over health & safety I'm surprised those walls haven't been removed!
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!

Andrew

it probably is, although in my mind Tony was closer to the wall.  Probably an example of how the truth inadvertently gets embellished.

By the way, getting a flattering picture of Tony playing golf is a difficult task.  I think even Aidan Bradley would be challenged to find the right combination of light and clouds to take that pic.  Actually, I think Phillip Gawith's recent pics in a French Fog would have had the best chance of a good Tony Muldoon action pic!.  LOL

so says Gods gift to golf - NOT!

yours (respectfully, Tony)
